Baby, it’s cold outside!

What does that mean for the Carvoholic? For some it means they will store away their machine until sunnier days (see manual for Storage Instructions) and for others, winter is the perfect time to carve.

The suggested environmental temperature for using the machine is above 40º F. When the temps fall, there are some things to keep in mind when operating the CW. Cold weather can introduce issues with the machine, but by knowing what and why, they will not stop you from creating your projects.

Electrostatic discharge - Protect your electronics from static electrical charge. Always ground yourself before touching the machine, turning on or off the power switch, or inserting the memory card. Make sure your dust collection system is well grounded, as well.
Metals contract in cold weather – Contraction of metals, particularly in the base, can affect the behavior of your machine’s head pressure & board sensor.

Head pressure can be affected, as contraction of the base can misalign the four vertical posts. This may first be noticed by difficulty in cranking the head up or down. Head pressure should normally run lower during the colder weather for both sandpaper & rubber belts. Here are the acceptable min/max numbers: For 40-50º the HP should be 60-70 lbs, 50-60º - 65-75 lbs, 60-70º - 70-80 lbs, 70-80º - 75-85 lbs, and 80º+ - 80-90lbs. Check head pressure and keep lubricated. If you do need to re-align the posts, check out our new video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLpKgHHuQUg
The board sensor can have a lower reading due to low head pressure or metals inside contracting and holding saw dust inside the narrow cavity that it looks through. Correct your head pressure and/or clean the board sensor per our video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cfTE8dDSGc
