I was asked to carve some text on the back of some small oval shaped souvenirs - I tried to make a sled for holding them by routing ovals but the pieces would not stay put and consequently got scuffed. What would be a good way to keep them in place?
size is about 2" x 4" oval, 1/4" deep

thanks

double sided tape or hot glue gun works very well.

As the others have suggested, double-sided tape works really good if you get the right kind. I use this stuff from Home Depot.

It's a little thicker than the standard stuff but, it really sticks. If you use it, I suggest using a minimal amount. Also, turners tape works pretty good. I use it on some of my lathe projects.
