First Carves

After a few months trying to get through a carve successfully, finaly found some success. These are my first few carves.

really simple first one i did, gave it to my girlfriend who put it in her mothers casket a couple of weeks ago when she passed

learned a lesson on thin fonts and size of the peice with this name placard i tried to make for my sister

making this one as a gift for my friend for his dental practice, slight error on the carve on the left hand side, not sure if its an image problem or carvewright problem, tried sanding it down but hell i figure hes messed up on my dental work enough using me as a guinea pig, he can be mine

The dentist sign may be a tracking issue. Did you use tape on the keypad side bottom of the board? That may cure that issue.
The thin fonts could be a height/depth issue. set the depth shallower and or the height to 50-75. Pine is bad about chipping like that, it is so soft. you might get away with it as is in oak.

Anyway nice carves. They are much better than my first ones.

Pretty darn good for first carves. The software certainly has a learning curve but you are on the way now. Look forward to seeing your next carves.

did not do the tape thing...unfamiliar with it to be honest, maybe you can explain it to me? since that carve I am now getting a front roller issue, not sure why or how to fix it at the moment.

i have some poplar that may work better on small fonts?

What you do is use a strip of masking tape along the bottom edge of the board where the board goes over the brass roller, (the keypad side of the machine). What this does is allow the brass roller to grip into the tape and get accurate readings. I do this on every board and every jig and sled. You will notice the difference. I will see if I can find a pic to show you what I mean.

Here is a pic of the bottom of one of my sleds. Showing the masking tape. I think this idea came from Al on the forum and it works wonders.

poplar is fairly soft also. Your first thought may be the cure for that one. I think Hal may have answered your tape question on the tracking issue, but if the machine is telling you front roller stuck thats something else.
If you do a search for (roller stuck" ) you will find some posts about it an how to fix it.
I just had that on one of mine. Basically remove keypad side cover (careful to not damage wires), remove the two screws holding the roller in question in, drop it down and blow it out and a hairball should come out. then put it together and carve.

Yes, you may not like the "fuzzys" from poplar but some regions of the U.S. seem to have better carving poplar that others.
