I just finished this last night It's a deep carve made from 8/4 Walnut and Maple. Thanks to Ken Johnson (DocWheeler) for the original idea.

Really nice, how deep are the pockets for the cards? Is it all one piece or is the name plate attached to the base? Seems to me you could carve the name then rotate the piece and carve the top and pockets, is this what you did?

The project has two pieces. The base and the name plate. The base is 12.5" wide and 2.75" high and then trimmed off to a 25 degree bevel on the table saw. The recesses for the cards are 3.75" wide by 1/25" high and 1.25" deep. The blank for the name plate is .5" thick and I cut a pocket in the center and glued in a strip of Maple before carving..

They tend to use up a lot of good wood.
I have not made anymore lately, hopefully able to do it again soon.

Since I used expensive 8/4 Walnut, I made a sled for the base. It saved a lot of wood.

It's steamed Black Walnut. This picture is the same as in my first post but, touched up a little in Photoshop for true color.
