I have been carving Icons which have a lot of detail to them. The STL's are really good and the patterns I made are really detailed but when it carves so much of the detail gets lost somewhere. Any advice would be appreciated. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/07/16/tu8edu5e.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/07/16/deheseve.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/07/16/9yqa4a2u.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/07/16/e2ebytaq.jpg I hope these pictures help.

If you can, post your project file. Not much we can do otherwise.

Nice looking projects.

Optimizing the bit in Designer and/or using a 1/32" carving bit is all that I can think of off-hand.

Bit optimization and the depth and height settings usually work for bringing out detail. Of course it all depends on the pattern.

Speaking about bringing out detail Floyd, I have been carving alot without a sled. I finally made a sled and now my projects are actually carving nicer and with better detail. The only thing i can figure is maybe the depth of the sled combination effected the depth of carve alil and made more detail ?? dunno

Great question! I have no clues on that one.

I think back when...someone stated that using a sled gave the board a bit more stability. And the thickness helped with the sound, defeaned the sound a bit.

Don't know if this will help with a STL, but if you take a scan, change it to a mpc, then ptn, then save it as mpw you give up some clarity. (Try uploading a large mpc vs. mpw.) If you use 3d and change the size to make a ptn you may make changes in the pattern (sizes of sweep and puff) and always make sure your z,y trucks are snug but free to move.

I will post them tomorrow. Been dealing with an emergency tonight. Our Foster son was bike riding with my other boys and got attacked by two dogs and bitten on both legs. Im pooped right now and ready for bed.

70653706547065570656I apologize for not getting these posted yesterday as I had planned. It wasn't a good day and I didn't get on the computer hardly at all. Here are the patterns. I've used new 1/16th carving bits and two different woods: Oak and pine.

kcc2012, I only looked at Last Supper for a quick glance but, if you play with the Height setting you will get more detail. I upped it to 500 and it seemed to make quite a difference. Just my suggestion.

Yes, it will bring out more detail (see pages 3 and 4 of this Tips & Tricks Tips, Common Questions and Answers – Part 1 – ISSUE 13 October 2008 (http://www.carvewright.com/assets/tips/CarveWrightTips_and_Tricks_Oct08.pdf)). BUT, it has an Additive Merge assigned to it. Increasing the Height with it assigned to the add merge causes the frame detail to suffer. So, the fix is to remove the Additive Merge on the Last Supper PTN so that a Height increase won't have an adverse effect on the frame details.

Thank you for the link to the tips and tricks. I try to refer to those but sometimes I forget or cant find the topic I'm looking for. I am going to re-carve the pattern tomorrow and I will try those changes. I remember carving this one and it didn't come out very good so I changed the height of the last supper but I think I did it really high and didn't change the additive merge I will play around with it and see what happens.
