No, you can leave 1.187. You can't run both at the same time, though.

YES!, but you MUST use the Run as Administrator command to both install it and register it, just like with 1.187 or 2.0 on Windows Vista, 7 and 8.

I'm replying to my own post to let people know what I found out by downloading the trial 3.000. From the display, at least, it looks like the problem with tabs has been corrected. There's no pattern distortion and no "fences" around carved regions. Of course, I couldn't try it on the actual carve without buying the license.

Bottom line: I'm going to upgrade and hope for the best.

MPC will not be backward compatible but patterns should be.
