Hello,

With the Fourth of July just around the corner, I thought it would be appropriate to create a patriotic-themed project to celebrate the occasion!

The Americana Flag Box is finished with paints and made to look a little worn by scuffing away strategic areas of paint with coarse sandpaper then applying a dark stain to make it look “older”.

Main items you will need:
1) The Project Files (included):
• Box_Lid-and_Sides.mpc
• Legged_Sides.mpc

2) Boards with the following dimensions:
Box Lid and Sides: 0.75" x 11" x 25"
Legged Sides: 0.75" x 11" x 19”

Do not use boards that are smaller than specified above unless using an appropriate jig.

Cut the following piece to size for the box bottom (not an mpc)
Box Bottom: .75" x 5.5" x 9"

3) Hinges of your choice (I used the No- Mortise hinges #00H6012 from leevalley.com and #6 x 0.5" brass wood screws)

4) Wood glue, sandpaper, wood stain, and/or paint and clear finish

5) A Dremel-type rotary tool with assorted sanding wheels and bits to sand small details and speed up preparation for finishing.

Apply your choice of finish. Here’s what I used on my own “Americana Flag Box” made from Select Pine:

• Applied Kilz White Primer (by brush) to all surfaces except the inside of the box
• Sanded, then painted the Red and Blue sections with acrylic craft paints.
• “Scuffed” the surfaces and edges to make it look “worn”
• Applied Rust-Oleum American Walnut Stain to all, then wiped most stain off for an antiquing effect to make it look “old”
• Several light coats of Krylon Clear acrylic spray
