Depth and Heigth settings

If I understand it correctly, the depth is the bottom surface of the carve. How does the heigth work? I ask as I tried to adjust heigth of a 2nd carve and it greatly affected the heigth of the 1st carve heigth setting.

Not to take away pkunk's favorite gripe, but I have explained my understanding of height/depth at least 5 times here. It will take less time for me to ask for you to search for them than to explain it again. If a mod would like to create a sticky for it, I will post again.
