It started out as a log of mesquite firewood. I turned the body on my lathe but the base is a two-sided carve using the Carvewright and the new 1/8" long carving bit.

Very nice indeed.
I usually do it the other way around -
turn nice wood INTO firewood!

Very nice. Really like the finish

Sanded to 600 grit. Then two coats of shellac, eight coats of semi-gloss lacquer and two coats of gloss lacquer. Lightly buffed with 0000 steel wool between each coat.

Great job on a beautiful piece of wood! May need to take a trip to one of the firewood sites around here on Saturday.

I've never seen mesquite for sale back here in the South but your project inspires me to search further afield. That's a beautiful lamp and superb finish you've created to highlight the grain. Nicely done all around.

A big thank you to all for the great evaluations. I'm in the process of making another for a matching set and finding it very difficult to find a good log. With mesquite, you never know what you'll get until after it's turned. That's when all of the flaws/cracks are exposed and you have to make a decision on whether it's just character flaws or scrap. Oh well, I guess it is just firewood to begin with.

That's an exceptional nice piece of wood turned into an exceptional nice lamp. Good luck on coming up with a matching piece.
