View Full Version : Poly Modeling

I finally got some time today to blow off work and have fun modeling. I am convinced polygon modeling is the way to go with organic decorative elements...way faster to do in quads than nurbs and easier to correct on the fly.

John nice work. When possible I still return to quads.

Thanks Eddie..for the most I am hooked on quads. I bought Aspire when I got another machine but don't model much in it...lol...find quads faster and easier for a lot of stuff...

John if you remember I started out with quads, and have stayed with it. I can do complicated organic modeling a lot faster with quads, than NURBS. Things like the semi truck was easier in quads, and much easier to combine objects in the same scene, keeping each independent of the other, plus easier to render. My three programs are quads, NURBS, and sculpting.

Never heard of these programs... you have sources?

Never heard of them either.
Are these being carved in acrylic or wood?

eelamb

Quads is any program that does modeling using quads, such as 3d max, blender, silo, lightwave and so on. NURBS is programs such as MoI3D, Rhino, and I believe aspire and artcam fall into these too. (may be wrong). Sculpting is ZBrush, and sculptrist.

Hi Guys,

There are quite a few polygon modeling programs out there ranging from free to several thousands. The ones costing several thousand dollar ones - 3dsMAx and MAYA - have way more features than you would ever need for modeling patterns, such as rendering and animation. Check out Blender its free and a very good modeling package http://www.blender.org/features-gallery/ for making cnc patterns.

Here is a link to a video that shows how to make a scroll...the guy is using 3dsmax but poly modeling is poly modeling...program really doesnt matter http://3dexport.com/3dtuts/3d-tutorials/modeling-luxury-interior-part-2-scroll/

Peep - those are not an actual carving in the finished photo..those are just a 3d render of the model

Underdog

So what quad program are you using?

eelamb
10-28-2013, 05:24 PM
John that is the first video I have watched on 3dsMAx. Thanks for giving the link. I do similar things using both MoI3D and silo3d. I draw it in MoI3d, place a planar (facet) on it, save it as low poly quads, then bring it into silo3d and begin cleaning it up, placing lines where I want them, and then the process of pushing and pulling lines for the desired shape.
Underdog, I believe John uses 3DsMax.

I just downloaded the site, I see a whole new learning curve,.... LAWD HAVE MERCY ON ME !!! LOL

Good luck Aokweld, it is something you have to be willing to give it your all and not give up on. It will be frustrating, fun and a joy, basically in that order. I went from quads to NURBS, to sculpting. Now I use all three, and I am still learning. Not as good as John is and I may never get that good. I suggest you watch all the videos you can get your hands on, start with blender, buy the book on blender, and start there. At least you are not out a large amount of money with blender, just the cost of a book and $30 is a cheap way to start poly modeling using quads. If you like modeling this way, and finance is there (it is not for me) then move into the better software.

What makes it easy here on the forum to learn is the help that we get do they have the same for that program? Cause I see needing a whole bunch of help!!

eelamb

Blender has a forum with many there willing to help.

Got to play around and practice a little more...getting faster at this. The frame was just some of the elements I already modeled and assembled

It's realy not as hard as it looks. Just takes some practice to learn the basics of poly modeling. Modeling cnc patterns is WAY easier than say modeling for animation where poly count and everything being a quad matters. I saw your learning Blender..great program. The feature set is really as rich as 3dsmax or maya. I ended up getting Modo and also 3dsmax...but if knew then what I know now I would have nutted down Blender. Principals are all the same the tool sets and interfaces are the only diff with most of the programs.

Here is a link to a site that helped me a lot with classical elements http://viscorbel.com/free-tutorials/ this the one I paid for that REALLY put me in the right direction http://viscorbel.com/shop/classic-furniture-vol2-ornament/

good luck with Blender

John, i just thought you might like to know, when I try to click on your www.cncmodelclub.com link that firefox reports it as an attack page and will not open it.

Also, I love the santa and am going to carve it today.

You don't have to take it down. Just leave it up. I don't care.

Is it all right to carve the Santa?.. I'm a little confused... I just got done carving the Santa... If its not all right I won't carve another.

I got a laugh out of the fact that John and I used the same reference image. And if anyone gets a little joy out of carving a Santa then that's great.

How do yo get from Blender to MPW or PTN (afford ably)?
Clint

eelamb
11-06-2013, 03:47 PM
Designer has two ways to get a model (poly, nurbs, or sculpting) into it. One being an image, the other being stl importer. If your 3d software saves as an gray scale image, then that is the lowest cost. If not then stl importer at $200. If you want cad imports then DXF importer, for it imports as vectors.

jpaluck
11-06-2013, 05:48 PM
Clint

Blender will export an .stl file but you will need the .stl importer for designer

Here is a linen fold I was playing with...kind of a mind teaser to get the folds...I got it now. I included a pic to show how I did the intial profile in 3d space then it was simply and edge extrude & tweaking the quads.

This model is not for resale on e-bay

Yeah Eddie but once you do a few like in the picture I posted it's pretty simple.

Play around with some head modeling...kinda came out like a comedy mask but wasn't really trying

Not for re-sale on e-bay

I had to see if I could still make one. A little pinching on this one but otherwise OK.

looks good Eddie...quads or MOI?...can you send the obj?

eelamb

That was Moi3D, so quick using moi. Maybe 10 minutes tops.
And here it is with the pinching removed the tears on sides

I tried it and for cut out the left eye will not highlight for the cut out all other ok,, to bad you don't have the back done so to concave for the mask

Henry, just invert the pattern, flip it, and make it about .25" smaller for the back side. May have to experiment with how much smaller to make it. Do a center both ways on the front and back of the board. Should line up good then.

Edit: added two sided carve like Henry wanted.
