tool bar use

i can't use the texture tool and some other buttons on the tool bar. they stay a light gray and do not work. what am i doing or not doing?????????????:(

Is the area you are trying to use the texture tool a closed area? Go to view and select Toggle non-end points to make sure the area is closed.
