Posting photos as jpegs on the forum

I've recently noticed a number of photos have been posted as jpegs which don't expand into a new window when they are clicked on.
I assume this is because the originals are already small and they haven't been compressed any.
Can anyone clear up this minor mystery for me ?
I do like everything neat and tidy :D

Greybeard, you are correct. If the pic is below a certain file size or pixel count, (both settable in the Attachment settings), it doesn't bother making a thumbnail and making it a downloadable picture... it's so small, the full picture actually fits within the thumbnail specs, so you can just right-click on it and save it from there...
