I want to do a carving using a 1/4"ballnose when I install the bit when asked by machine it hones finds surface then comes back to side and says to install 1/16" carving bit I could continue with ballnose but wasnt sure how carving would come out so installed carving bit and as far as the little clear stop it falls off the bit. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong. Thanks Doug

To change the raster/pattern carving bit for a project you need to select "board settings" and pick from either the 3/16, 1/8 or 1/16" ball nose. There is no selection for the 1/4" ball nose for pattern carving.

For the bit stops are you using the right size for the size of bit shank, 1/4" or 1/2"?

There is no selection for the 1/4" ball nose for pattern carving.

Their has always been a 1/4 ball nose in the pattern bit menu for carving raster's with the exception the dark days of removal. The good news is the 1/4 is back to where it belongs in Designer's pattern menu. :)

I had thought they and the 1/4" ball nose listed but when I looked at the selection box mine only shows the 1/16, 1/8 and 3/16 bits for the pattern bit in the board setting...this for both 1.187 and 2.002

It listed in the bit selection though for other bit choices for vectors..

Odd, I see it in mine.

Yea in the old days I used the 1/4 ball a lot for fingerboards worked really well.... What system are you running XP?

I run win7 and the screen shot was designer 2.002. So got any clues why it does not show the 1/4" bit???

Same here, designer 2.002

looks like your menus look odd, try setting the Window view back to normal.

I have never seen it there either. I remember there was some straight bits which have been removed from the list. That 1/4 ballnose must be some left over artifact from a beta version. Maybe Metallus can explain why you have a feature no one else has.

It is a mystery how you could have kept that feature though all those versions. Have you always installed Designer over the old versions as the new versions came out? Do you see the 1/4" ball nose in the current beta versions?

I guess I should have been more clear on my ? I meant to say that when I was in designer and I drew a cut path and chose a 1/4" ba;;nose to be used on that cut path when I uploaded and started tp procced on the machine it first asked to install the ballnose bit when I did that after the truck came back the screen said to install the carving bit so I switched bits and the carving went great at the end it said to insert ballnose so I did it started to rout on the cut path but the flexshaft sounded like it was going to break down very loud so after 2 passes I stopped the carving any guesses to why this happened also flexshaft got hot so I aborted

Everything you describe makes sense. You have a project which required carving with the 1/16 carving bit and then a path cut with the 1/4 ball nose bit. With cut paths and cut outs, the experienced users limit the depth of the cut using the "max pass depth" option in the bottom of the select bit dialog box. Usually I limit the cut depth to 1/4 inch per pass. If your depth was 3/4" or more, that would explain the strain on the machine.

Well I do not have it in any of the many versions I have on my computer. This really is an interesting mystery!

The 1/4" ballnose as a pattern bit is only available with a special license, which Brandon has. It is not available to the general public.

Well, that explains it. Thanks.

I'm not trying to get into some kind of 'class war' here. Fact is we do have licenses for beta testers/developers that grant full access to all software.

Regardless of what in the program made the bit available, what is the answer to the original ???? as to why it stops and asks for a different bit and what causes it to allow the overload on the drive/flexshaft ??

I tried to answer the original question in post 18.
