The good lord has seen fit to strike down a, "Queen of the woods", giant Beech tree. In the back forty of our church. I took a small sample home and s4s'ed it. It has a beautiful grain pattern, seems pretty hard, and the piece I had was relatively dry. It also showed some signs of spalting. Has anyone ever carved Beech? Just wanted to know, before I called the Lumber Lord...

Bert I haven't worked with beech but did a little research. Looks like you may have a treasure trove there. Hardness is between red oak and white ash and it is thought of as a good carving wood. Lots of beautiful carved furniture pics on the web. Looks like it would be worth slicing and stacking for a while. It runs between $5 and $6 BF in my area.
