No, I am not associated with them, but it would be a good CW accessory (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/45699157/fuel3d-a-handheld-3d-scanner-for-less-than-1000).
Easily create a 3D image to carve.
Not sure how to get it into a .ptn, but it should be possible.

From site:
Check out the portfolio page on our website (http://www.fuel-3d.com/portfolio/) – you can download actual scan files in .STL .OBJ and .PLY formats. Go play – we think you’ll like it!
Looks like stl might be the way to go if you have the stl importer.

Interesting product, the problem with it is the price I'm not saying that it wouldn't be helpful gosh knows I need all the help I can get but I could buy another carvewright machine for $1500.00....

neat product-
I made a similar device (as have others here) using a line laser level and a program called 123d catch.
http://forum.carvewright.com/showthread.php?19321-3d-scanner-and-David-3d-software&highlight=laser
The process is a cool, albeit a little "fuzzy"- (which gets better using projector optics instead of a laser
as this one seems to)
Thanks for the post- it's good to see these Berkley guys actually doing commercial work with their GREAT
idea
