I could not open it in 1.187 but could open it in 2.001. Strange since ptn files are supposed to be backwards and forwards compatible. How was it created zan29?

I think it is forward not backward.

Nope, this new format isn't confusing at all...I'm sure things will be even better when 3.0 comes out and we have three different groups of users that have different "up to date" software versions... (insert sarcasm smiley here)

I'm still waiting on LHR to answer whether 2.xx will become the free version when 3.xx comes out... if so at least things would only be as confusing as they are now and not more so.

Cool sign though - thanks for sharing it

Lawrence

I think it is forward not backward.

I thought that was the case for project files (mpc), but not pattern files. I was wrong, now I remember that pattern makers were going to have to use 1.187 for awhile. So much to remember.

Bummer... doesn't work in 1.187! And it begins... free pattern can't be opened in free software. Thank you for trying to share it with us!

It will open with the old version if you have pattern editor. Here's the pattern for the old version.

I have the pattern editor, but it still would not open. However the second version you posted worked.

Nice one!

I've tried several times. Keep getting "not recognized project file" error.

edit: Second one opened fine.

Nice little sign..it sure would be nice to get a cup that cheap.

So I saved my penies for a long time so I could buy my CW less than a year ago and now a new version comes out and I can't use my software to open a file .That is even more discouraging. I am a software developer and even for me it does not feel right....Just sayin...
When I create new versions i create forward and backward compatibility.

Just the same I love my carve wright

I do not think that is true. You do not need the pattern editor to open a ptn file. In fact, you cannot open a ptn in the pattern editor if it was created by someone else .

You just open the file with Designer and you get the import window as if importing an image file or clipboard image. If it is your ptn, then you have the pattern editor and it will open instead.

The thing is that now you cannot open an mpc or a ptn in 1.187 if they were created in a newer version.

This is all so confusing. I tried opening the pattern with the old version and it opened the pattern editor. It should work with 1.187 cause the last one I shared came from this version.

Clarification (I hope).

PTN files are backward compatible, MPW files are not.

For instance, if you download a scan in Designer 2.0X and first save it into a MPW file format to work on it, before converting it to a PTN, it will not be usable in 1.187.

Instead, first save it to a PTN, then edit it and avoid the MPW format.

Hope this is clear...

You are right! But, it only works for you because it is your pattern.

I just tried an experiment. Saved a pattern in the 2.001 pattern editor. When I tried to open it in in Designer 1.187, it opened fine in the 1.187 pattern editor. If, however, it had not been my pattern, the pattern editor would not have opened. Instead, the import window would been called and would have rejected it.

Edit: maybe some more experimenting is required!

I find this is true: Create an mpw in the 2.001 pattern editor, save it and it will not open in the 1.187 pattern editor.

My question is: If someone else creates a ptn in the 2.001, can I open it in the 1.187 import window? (Was the coffee cup and example or was it a ptn from an mpw in 2.001?)

Can someone with see if Designer 1.187 will open the attached pattern which was saved in the 2.001 pattern editor?

TerryT

Probably didn't come from 187. It opened in 186 for me. It wouldn't do that if it was 187.

Still haven't gone to 187 until its fixed. But your pattern opened in 186.

No. If ptn files are backward compatible for other users, this should open in the import window.

Ok, one more quick experiment. I Created this pattern in 2.001 with a group - save pattern and then I saved it in the 2.001 pattern editor. See if it opens in 1.187.

Well this is good news that the patterns are really backward compatible. Something funny was happening with the coffee cup pattern.
