Software problem. When I downloaded the trial software, I installed it on a removable memory stick as I usually do with trial software in case of problems. In my case it was my “F” drive (F:\Woodwork\… ectra). All worked fine and I was able to use the software with no problems. When the timing ran out for the trial version, I uninstalled that software from the F drive using Windows control panel “Add or remove programs”

After receiving my machine, obtaining the activation ID and registration numbers I was able to use the newly purchased software. I was surprised when I saw the patterns I created using the trial software because when I first used the trial version that directory was empty, I assumed after uninstalling the trial software from “F”, that the newly installed unlocked new version would also be empty. The library directory held the same items as I had in the trial version. I have version 1.115 installed.

When I went to the help page and clicked for help on “cut”, a message was displayed by carvewright as follows, The page could not be found, 'F:/Woodwork/docs/html/Drawing1_2.htm#_Drawing_Tools'. It seems that the help function was looking in “F” instead of c:\program files\carvewright where the new disk installed the software. Clicking on “Handbook” resulted in the same problem. This leads me to believe that other parts of the software might not be installed in the correct directories.

What needs to be done to correct the problem in order to use this expensive machine and software?

When software is installed it writes A LOT of stuff to the registry. When it is uninstalled must softwre packages do not bother to clean it up, when you update a package it may or may or may not rewrite all this stuff in the registry that points to where certain files for the program can be located. Your 'Favorites' in Designer is stored in your user profile on the C:\Drive so it was still in the same place. Lists of last files loaded adn such are also kept in the registry so they may show up, as in your case, but not be there.

I would suggest uninstalleing designer, and using a Registry cleaner like RegVac http://www.superwin.com/index.htm to get rid of the dead links and unused keys. I have used the RegVac trial version and it works well (leave it in novice mode). It saves a list of what it has removed so you can always put it back.

After a good registry clcen, reinstall Designer.

WhenI first looked my search bombed looking again I see that The demo writes several keys in the registry I can see. It does use the My documents as a default storage location thats why you saw your demo stuff.
If the reg cleaner does not do the trick and you know how to do regediting

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Installer\Folders]
check for pointers to your F: drive search for
\CarveWright\docs\html these look like the help files pinters

Just a guess I never seen this before.

I edited the wrong info out of this and hope an easier solution presents itself.
best of luck.

yes it does write to the registry, I still have the demo software installed on this PC and here is the forst reg key I found searchign for Designer:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\gui.exe]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\gui.exe\shell]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\gui.exe\shell\open]
@="Open with &CarveWright Designer"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\gui.exe\shell\open\ command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\CarveWright\\gui.exe\" \"%1\""
"command"=hex(7):71,00,48,00,71,00,2b,00,63,00,44,00,74,00, 5e,00,5f,00,40,00,\
70,00,71,00,4a,00,58,00,62,00,53,00,4f,00,44,00,50 ,00,4d,00,4e,00,65,00,77,\
00,46,00,65,00,61,00,74,00,75,00,72,00,65,00,31,00 ,3e,00,27,00,50,00,74,00,\
77,00,5f,00,74,00,55,00,78,00,28,00,3f,00,2e,00,61 ,00,42,00,7a,00,48,00,4e,\
00,75,00,63,00,47,00,44,00,20,00,22,00,25,00,31,00 ,22,00,00,00,00,00

there are lots more, not fun to get rid of by hand.

Ugh that is not pretty, I did not find the paths with the Ctrl F search, My search was messed up. but following your .reg file it was under designer. Ok now to find just the docs pointer that has the old path to the docs folder and he should be able to change that and get back rolling.

Fortunately my son was able to log onto my computer remotely (from VT to SC) using “PC Anywhere” and adjust the registry such that the help files now work. I noticed that there are some drawing functions (such as angle tool) that I can’t use or drag onto the drawing tool bar when using the customize tool bar function. Is this normal or do I need an upgrade? From all appearances, there seems to be no difference between the trial software and purchased system. Is my installation still lacking something?

There are several features that are still in development and are not currently available. It is rumerd that an unpdated version of Designer will be out soon. A completely diffrent 'Pro' version is rumerd to be in the works for the mid/end of the year.
