Finally finished a box I have been wanting to do for quite a while. First trick is the lid insert. I took a piece of walnut and carved out a 4x4 square region .250 deep in the center. Then I inserted a piece of redheart wood in the hole. After I had planed it flat, I glued the birdseye veneer over the whole thing. Then I used a vector pattern and carved the rose where the redheart was, so you have a red rose with no paint. Worked good except no veneer left in the center, will fix that in the future.

For the front and sides I used the machine to cut the ovals all the way through, then after sanding them smooth I put a small profile around it on the router table. I put the veneer for the windows on the same MDF panels used for the inside, then glued the cross on the front. On the back I painted the red rose to go with the lid.

The tray was carved from a solid block of spalted soft maple 1-1/4" thick, carved as deep as possible. Vector carved a couple highlights in the center. All in all it came out pretty good. It looks nice, always loved the contrast of walnut and maple. Cut the box joints on a router table jig, finish is spray shellac. Inside of box measures 6x10.5, base is 9x14.

Great work--it should be truly appreciated. The way you put the rose on the top is something that I've been thinking about for quite awhile. It really came out good and the whole box looks terrific. Bob

Thanks for all the comments. Of course, in true perfectionist style I have to point out that I made an error placing the cross on the front. I centered it before wrapping the fabric for the inside on the panels. Once I put it together the thickness of the fabric made it too high, but it still works. If i make another I will know.

What a beautiful box. The birdseye maple really helps to set off the carvings.
