Horsing around this evening, I came up with what I consider to be my first actual pattern that I could see trying to carve out. It was done entirely in Illustrator/Photoshop, and imported into Designer as an image. I'm posting it mainly for critique, but anyone can do whatever they like with it. I've also attached the PNG file to show what it looks like in PS before importing.

Very nice wrok. Did you use your updated GUI AI2MPC converter? I think you are getting the hang of this very quickly.

Nope. I just did the basic shapes in Illustrator, then added subtle shading in Photoshop using various layers and layer effects to produce curvature. Some radially blurred noise overlays produced the striations.

I'm very impressed! Nice work.

Looking good! You gotta teach us that trick in PS.

After loading the MPC I had to comment! Very nice! Maybe you can teach some of us PS users a few tricks? I did notice one thing. Your large flower is hitting another element in the carving. Causing it to nip the edges of the petals.

I saw that after I posted it. I increased the radius on the decorative routs, and added feather to the rose element for a nifty effect. I've attached the revised file.

Agreed, badbert. If I ever have the time, perhaps I'll turn this thread into a Photoshop tutorial.

That would be fantastic!! I am curious about
radially blurred noise overlays looking forward to learning! This is why we welcome new users here. It seems like every new user brings new talent and skills to teach us all! I learned PS from watching some of the greatest car photographers in the country. I learned a lot about photo manipulation. But sculpting and modeling, is a lot different than photography!

Well - it is and it isn't. Real 3d-modeling is indeed vastly different. With the CW, however, we're really only dealing with relief carving. That simplifies things considerably. As long as you are able to orient your brain to think "black = up, white = down" it gets conceptually easier. I need to work out how to import a 16-bit image, though. The 8-bit banding really annoys me.
