Just a quick sign using a pattern from the boards and a design copied from ETSY...

Walnut on maple.

That is very nice. Did you carve through the walnut to the maple?

That turned out really good! Also curious about your technique.

Yup, carved about .1 deeper then the thickness of the walnut. 6hrs on Optimum setting, Tightened the rollers and carved a 2nd time to eliminate almost all sanding... Extra time on machine but I didnt have time to sand...was a rushed Birthday present..

I carved a recess into the maple, glued in the walnut and then carved the design setting the carve depth to about .085 deeper then the walnut was thick so it carved through the walnut into the maple!

I am only guessing but I would venture that Evan really liked it. I know I do!

I do that too, carve a second time, but I use a diamond burr. Why not have the machine do the sanding! Great technique.

Where do you get your Burr bits from? Run it as the 1/16 carving bit when the machine asks?

I bought them online. German I think. They have 3/32 shanks so they are not so easy to chuck. I use a shim to touch for the first pass with the 1/16 carving bit, then touch without the shim for the burr pass. Really does work well for those complicated carves which are hard to sand.

Here are the ones I use:

Unfortunately they have a 3/32 shank. This is no problem for me since I use collets.

I see Bergerud does his second carving with the Burr bit. Is that what you did too, or did you just run the carving again with the same carving bit?

Thanks.

How thick is the shim u use? Where do u get the collets to adapt to the 1/2" chuck?

I would just use a box cutter blade for a shim. Touch on the blade for the first carve and then touch on the wood for the second carve. I use an ER16 collet chuck that I adapted myself. Lately, we have been talking about an ER11 adapter for the Carvetight. Such an adapter would allow one with a Carvetight to hold any size bit up to 1/4".
