Here is my first carved keepsake box. Original design, using basic patterns. Poplar with English Chestnut stain.

Box is beautiful!!!! Did you use the Carvewright for making the whole box?

Thanks! I used the CW for everything but the base and the edge routing.

the only thing that I can see wrong with that box is that it's not on my coffee table, beautiful job...

I have always heard that poplar is hard to stain, but you did it well.

Poplar is like any soft, porous wood. It stains blotchy. I have found that using two coats of conditioner, about 30 minutes apart, then waiting about an hour before staining, poplar has some of the prettiest stained grain of any wood. I wish I had started using conditioner years ago. It would have made my life SOOOO much easier. Now I use it on most everything.

Dehrlich, your box is phenomenal. Fantastic work on it. You have a gift my friend!

Thank you all, appreciate it. As for the staining, I just used plain ol Minwax stain, no conditioner. I do experiement on scrap from the same board to see how it's going to work first. If it does blotch I use conditioner or thinned shellac.
