Here is my first carved keepsake box. Original design, using basic patterns. Poplar with English Chestnut stain.

Thanks! I used the CW for everything but the base and the edge routing.

the only thing that I can see wrong with that box is that it's not on my coffee table, beautiful job...

I have always heard that poplar is hard to stain, but you did it well.

Poplar is like any soft, porous wood. It stains blotchy. I have found that using two coats of conditioner, about 30 minutes apart, then waiting about an hour before staining, poplar has some of the prettiest stained grain of any wood. I wish I had started using conditioner years ago. It would have made my life SOOOO much easier. Now I use it on most everything.

Thank you all, appreciate it. As for the staining, I just used plain ol Minwax stain, no conditioner. I do experiement on scrap from the same board to see how it's going to work first. If it does blotch I use conditioner or thinned shellac.
