Cameo Question

OK - so I see that people have redacted patterns from pictures of cameos. Neat idea. Has anyone found a material that would have a graduated color through its z-axis, so that when a cameo pattern was carved in it, it would actually look like a cameo? Is there graduated corian? I can't imagine why such a thing would be manufactured. Perhaps there's something else? Could translucent corian be glued up to some black, or shell colored corian to produce a faux cameo?

I'm kind of flying before I can walk here, as I haven't actually taken the CW plunge yet, but it seems to me that having the ability to produce realistic cameos would be amazing.

Just curious.
