Below is a link to a professional 2D CAD program from Solid Works. I have been a mechanical product design engineer for over 25 years have used AutoCad for 20 years as well as solid modeling programs
such as Solid Edge, Solid Works, Inventor and Pro Engineer. I just down loaded DraftSight (http://www.3ds.com/products/draftsight/free-cad-software/#xtor=AD-508-[freetoolsBovw]-[middle]-[intext]-[www.solidworks.com]) from Solid Works, DraftSight is a free 2D CAD program which from a quick look appears to have most of
AutoCad's capability's. Solid Works is one of the top solid modeling CAD programs and the 3D version starts at around $5,000. DraftSight will open AutoCad .dwg and .dxf. and save in a
number of .dwg and .dxf formats from AutoCad V-12 to current versions. DraftSight seems to work a lot like AutoCad including sharing many of the same commands and tools and runs on
XP, Vista or Windows 7. This program along with the DXF Importer will make a fantastic CAD package. This program most closely emulates AutoCad.

Another free 2D CAD program is from Solid Edge and this one is parametric meaning when you change a dimension the object dimensioned changes. I used Solid Edge for several years designing
Fire Trucks. Solid Edge is also a 3D solid modeling program and is a step up in both price and functionality from Solid Works. I have a earlier version of the 2D Solid Edge which is also a very
powerful CAD program, I can't try the latest version as I am still on XP and 2D Solid Edge requires Windows 7. The Solid Edge 2D is basically the 2D drafting portion of their full modeling program and when I was using Solid Edge designing Fire Trucks we almost completely stopped using AutoCad because the 2D drafting in Solid Edge was so good.
