Attached is a centerline sign that I finished and golf leafed after 20 coats of hand sanded varnishing....

That looks great. Can you share the gold leafing process you used to make that sign. I have only used a liquid gold leaf but it does not look nearly as nice as that. Thanks
Rob

OK..... so here's my question on gold leafing (since I don't have a clue about it). I was given a small glass jar and is has small gold flakes in it. I know it's not glitter. I thought gold leafing came in sheets. Does it by chance come in containers as gold flakes too? As I mentioned, it's definitely not glitter and it's just small dry gold flakes. Besides, how does one put that on something?

Hi Carrothers,
Very nice carve and finish on your SUGAR sign. The multiple coats really show up beautifully. Did you use real or faux gold leaf. I'd be interested to exchange notes on our techniques and see what we can both learn to then share with the Forum. Or you lead off and I'll fill in any additional tips.

Excellent work on the Sign !!!!

Jerry,

Norm on This Old House did a Sign Show and they did some Gold Leaf. You can buy the Video. Also look on YouTube for videos, I bet there are many.... Normally the Sheets are uses and the crumbs are recycled.

Good Luck,

To move this discussion along a bit here's a reference on the real basics of gilding with either real or faux (imitation) gold leaf. More to follow after this gets you thinking about the process

Good information Capt Bruce. From past information from a sign maker years ago he told me to use a potatoes to prevent the gold from sticking where you do not want it. His was recessed lettering. He would apply the glue to the letters, and cut a potatoes in half, then and rub it around the letters. This prevented the gold leaf from sticking to the area you did not want the gold to be. Have not tried it but watched him do it. Another trick he did was to buy small glass clear beads, which he put into the recessed letters after he painted. This gave a reflection when lights hit it for road side signs. (not gold leaf signs)
