I would like to use my router table to cut 45 degree miters for boxes I make.

Is there a brand of router bit that you experts would recommend. Clean cutting long life etc.

Is there a brand you would stay away from?

Thanks for the advice.

I like freud and whiteside I get them off Amazon and save a little money they both are excellent bits in my opinion, they can be resharpened several times, if you can find a place to do a good job at a sensible rate.

There are many router bits companies you can choose from , I use
Freud 40-114 45 Degree Chamfer Bit with 1/2-Inch Shank (http://www.amazon.com/Freud-40-114-Degree-Chamfer-2-Inch/dp/B0000225VN/ref=sr_1_1?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1358946930&sr=1-1&keywords=freud+router+bits+45+deg) in Amazon.

+1 to Whiteside being great. I've found CMT to be of equally high quality. (Freud, Eagle America's US bits, and Milwaukee are good as well, just one step down IMHO though you really can't go wrong with these.

I stay away from Skil, Vermont American, rockler and Eagle America's imports as the quality just does not seem as good.

Just my opinion though- your mileage may vary!

Consider this one: http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=2142&site=ROCKLER
(http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=2142&site=ROCKLER)It makes a strong joint and aligns itself. It does require exact setup.

+1 for CMT. Excellent bits for the price!

I do own a Yonico glue joint bit, that I bought just because the price was right!

It does a great job! And for the price you can't go wrong! It was a trial to get set-up so I made Set-up blocks for different thicknesses.

The set up blocks make all the difference don't they Bert. I'm always better off doing the set-up with a guage than a ruler. Think of it as braile for wood carvers.

Thanks to all you experts. That makes the research so much easier. Now, if any of you could get rid of the -25F we have been having...

I check out the router bit section for clearance deals any time I go to somewhere that has them. The best bit is one bought at a good price! Stay away from those super sets for cheap price, you get what you pay for. Having said that I got one of those many years ago and still use them and they work great.

I don't always buy expensive bits, but when I do, I prefer Freud. Stay dusty my friends!

Im seconding Lawrence. I have had very good luck with Whiteside and CMT. I purchased a SKILL door set a year or two ago. I used them once and replaced them with a less expensive set from harbor freight that worked much better. Just my .02.

The problem that I have had seemed to be the bits were too short on the cutting edge to do good miters, at least in one pass. But maybe I just wasn't setting them up right.

I really enjoy working with the CMT bits. I have several sets for making cabinets and entry doors and they have worked well for years. I also have some Freud, Whiteside and MLCS bits. They all seem to do the trick. Some of the cheaper sets I have acquired over the years have long bit the dust. A few extra $ up front can last a long time....
