:idea: Can someone please help me, I am not sure what forum to ask this on so here it goes. I have been trying to print from designer to show a customer before I carve. But I can not get it to print a good picture. It comes out just a mess not good enough to show. Is there a way to print what I have designed? Thank You Jim

absolutely- what you need to do is use your "snipping tool" This will allow you to capture a portion of your screen.

If you are using windows, you already have this.... just bring up your picture as you'd like it to show (sometimes you have to angle it or change the lighting to make it show the detail and don't forget to toggle off your construction lines and your snap lines!) then go to your search box and type in "snipping" and a program (little pair of scissors) will come up

The screen will go hazy and then you left-drag a box of whatever you'd like to capture, save it as a JPEG, then open it with whatever program you'd like to use to print it out (right-click, print works for me) or just email them the pic
It works well for me and I use it all the time to capture pics like these designs I made tonight for a potential customer. It is a great way to display how a carve will look.

one more thing-- if you really are printing (or posting to a white webpage) you can also use a program like paint.net to quickly remove the black background so that you don't use as much ink/the pic blends in

If you really REALLY want to make it blend in, find the site and copy the color with your snipping tool and replace the background with this color... like this

If you struggle with this, feel free to post your MPC and I'll make up a jpeg for ya

Jim... I use "MWSnap 3" which is a free program. It let's you capture all or part of anything on your screen. You then "save as" and it deposits the picture in My Pictures (Windows). You can then print or e-mail it. I think it is a great program.

Like Lawrence and others I use the snipping tool in Windows (you can also add it to the bottom Menu Bar on the screen as a shortcut).

For anything that is going to require adding text to the image or annotations ( like dimension lines) I use SnagIt (not free but very much worth its cost) which then brings up the image in an editor window for manipulation and printing/saving. It also allows you a variety of choices of just what you want to capture from the screen.

A second on Lawrence's notes about adjusting the angle and lighting inside Designer 3D view before you perform the capture with any add-on program as this can make all the difference in bringing out your carving's details and depth. On some pieces it helps to turn off the woodgrain to show just the carved depth details (rather like seeing the carving done on MDF rather than "oak."

In this example I had not yet turned off the Construction Lines so I just captured it again and sent sent it with my bid. Hope this helps.

Pretty sure she's been doing it for many many years (retired professional).... not sure on material/tool cost to get into it though, but she is truly an artist.

The engravings are not cheap... by the time my plane is done I would not be surprised (or upset) if the cost was well into four figures to do two sides and the lever cap. She is also a very accomplished woodworker.

There are some cheaper engravers out there, but Cloudy's work on tools is the best I've ever seen and it is very popular - even with some ww'ing celebrates!

I hit the "CTRL" and "print screen" keys at the same time and the entire screen is captured to the clipboard. Then I can paste it into my desktop publishing program or paint to make any modifications I need.

This is also a great feature to import an image you capture from your browser and paste it directly into Project Designer.
It is best to make your finished piece as big as possible to minimize pixelations.

Stupid question of the day?
What version of windows are you using that has the snipping tool?
Windows 8 apparently does not have this tool? If it does it will not pull up when i search for it.
Any other options to saving as Jpeg or PDF on files to email or print pics?
