Going to visit my son who purchased a CW machine and would like to find out how to get a pattern for a BENNETT coat of arms and or how to make a pattern from a .jpg image (if the image has enough resolution ?) Thanks in advance for helping a newbie. As much detail as possiblefor making a relief carving will be greatly appreciated.

Post a picture or a link and someone will probably step forward and make a pattern for you.

DickB is correct - post a picture or link. I googled your Coat of Arms and several showed up. So knowing which one it is that you want would be a big help.

I hope this jpg image will work. I have a piece of walnut just under 7 inches wide and long enough to make several copies. It is 1 3/8 thick and hope this will work for a nice relief carving.
Only see my son every year or two and this will be our first project on his CW machine. thanks! (plan to use the 1/16 carving bit...)

Did the best I could do with the image size.

See if this pattern will work for you - You can re-size it as needed. Use Bit Optimization: Best

Thanks Chief for working on this pattern! Sure is nice of you. I am traveling next week to get to NC to work on this. (1660 miles)
Maybe you know if they allow more than one copy of the CW software for just one machine? Sure would be nice if I could work on patterns in New Mexico and send them to my son.
And thank you for your service to our country.

nice job chief.
would you mind explaining how you created it?
i played around with paint.net and couldn't get a clean pattern when imported into carvewright

i played around with paint.net and couldn't get a clean pattern when imported into carvewright

Converted to grayscale and added a touch of Gaussian blur in adobe photo elements (learn that trick here on the forum from the pros), then imported to designer, re-sized larger at the import screen. Then opened it in pattern editor and a little smooth, and a little more blur.

Some are easy, some are harder, and some we just get lucky on, lol.

I played some more and made it inot a shield as well - files are attached

Use Gimp or Paint.net and use the wand tool and select the red area and change the color to a light grey

Here's some quick and cheap advice... you can use the same technique to "fine tune" getting rid of the colors completely or add different shades of grey/color as well.

during my review of the vid I noticed that I called "circles", "squares" a couple of times... we could make a drinking game out of how many times I get a shape wrong ;)

Hope this helps,
Lawrence

That is really a great video, Lawrence. It is an excellent primer on working with patterns. Thank you for putting it together and I like the idea of the drinking game, but I was too focused on what you were doing and didn't really hear anything that didn't make sense.... maybe if I had a drink before watchinig it....yea, that's the ticket :)

Well here's my attempt at carving out a project for our upcoming reunion. Gonna just set it up for relatives to have a drawing to see who gets it. Then we'll all see if we can sign the back. Hope it makes a nice "memento" for that special day of gathering. Of course you know relatives (that I've never seen) will say "I want one... can you make me one"? LOL

What a beautiful job, Jerry....All the way around. Super carve and the painting is excellent. I also commend you on the idea of having everyone sign it as a memento. I am afraid you better replenish your wood supply. I think you may be busy after this gets unveiled....

Very nice work JerryB .Just a little to make things last. Seal the back so when people sign it the ink will not bleed .Or front then one more coat to finish it.
Happy Carving

So... the rest of the story on my Coat of Arms plaque..... I raffled the plaque for $1.00 per ticket. After a 1st cousin won the plaque I placed his ticket back in with rest and had another drawing for the money that had been collected & another relative won the $105.00. It was all fun & enjoyed by all. I picked up another 3 orders from others so it all turned out good for me in the long run. On a personal note what I enjoyed the most was a cousin of mine telling everyone his story of how he became a US Boxing Olympian at the age of 18yrs old & fighting in Rome in 1960. Then also the story of one of the other members of that same US Boxing team. Some guy named Cassius Clay. Cool stories & amazing career. Yup.... good time!

Highdet, I just put 2.0 on two machines. You have to license the program to two specific computers, but they allow the software on two computers. I already did it so I know it's true.

Here is my rendition of my family crest for our reunion coming up next month. I'm not going to raffle it but am going to have a drawing for it and the winner will have every one else sign the back for him/her. I haven't carved it yet but will post when it's finished...

Very handsome design George,
We'll look forward to finished pictures. That will be worth optimal carving speed or the fuzzies down in the deep spots will drive you crazy. Nice work Sir.

Here is my version of the Moore family crest for our reunion next month. The carve came out better than anticipated, but I only wish that I could be a lot more adept at wielding a paint brush. I did a couple of changes from the pattern posted earlier. The first pic is the original drawing downloaded from the net. I left room on the sides for every one to sign the plaque.

It does look great. I wondered, however, about the lion. It is not quite the same as Designer's lion but it is very close. Could you use the Designer lion or do these Coats of Arms have to be exact?

Thanks, bergerud. I tried a carve with the lion in the picture but I couldn't get the details to come out enough so I opted for the other lion with less detail. It's not exact but I don't think it really matters. I think it just depends on the designer's choice since there are a lot of different lion drawings available.

Can someone have a try at my coat of arms. I just can not seem to get any height out of it.

try importing this, you might also try it inverting the pattern. You can play with the greys in a paint program to change the heights.
