This guy also sells a lot of brushes. Does anyone know if any of his brushes would work in the cut motor? LHR seems to always be out of stock on these.

I have been trying, but have had no luck so far finding the brushes from a source other than AL and LHR. Does anyone know what the brush specs are or have another location to purchase them?

When you measure them think Metric... I did look a few years ago with no luck... BUT... the guy with the caps if given the measurements AND a picture might be able to come up with them... I am thinking most of the components are off the shelf.... In China....

I am ordering some caps.... Price is right...

So I pulled the trigger on this set http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150908031449 and this set http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230851976298. I know I have to modify the connectors. I think I can file/sand them to the right size. And do the same to the brushes. These are longer so if they fit, they should last a lot longer! If not... I have wasted $8 on worse! :) I'll keep you informed!

I received the brush sets in the mail. http://www.ebay.com/itm/5-Packs-Pcs-16mm-x-13mm-x-6mm-Motor-Carbon-Brushes-for-Power-Tool-/330811320847?pt=Power_Tools&hash=item4d05e42a0f is the closest I could find. They are a little bigger in every dimension. But a few minutes with a flat file... and they worked perfectly!! The carbon files very easily and very smoothly. But it is a little messy. Wear gloves and perform work on newspapers, so you can throw them away when done. But 5 pair for $4 with free shipping is an awesome deal!

Now if I can find a rubber belt that will work...

How does the Spring on the end look and the copper tether? Is it longer than the CW version? Will metal spring ever get into the commutator is the carbon wears out?

The way it works now is the copper tether stops the brush short of entering the Commutator and damaging it if the brushes are not changed before that point.

Just Curious?

Save a dollar now but end up buying a $100.00 motor later.

I'll never let them get that low Al. At this price they will become part of my 250 hour maintenance. And I am sure my OCD will make me check them before and after each carve for the next few weeks. The original set lasted 500+ hours. If I have any problems I will update this post.

Did you have to modify the ends at all? Filing seems worth it but if you have to modify the ends.....

A trick I used when fitting different brushes was to use the original springs. If the springs on the new ones are different, switch them. Longer or stiffer springs could cause the brushes to wear faster.

Just wanted to update every one. I pulled the brushes at 5 hours. The curvature of the armature was 90% formed. Brushes were intact. At ten hours the curvature was fully formed. Brushes are intact, no sign of heat. Same thing at 20 hours. I have to say, this is a success. I noticed the spin up when you load a bit, sounded different, and did not last as long. But the motor hums along steadily and has no sign of abnormal heat.

Definitely sounds like a great deal. I have been buying my DC brushes from these guys and they last just as long as the hf ones. And at about 1/10 of the cost.

I ordered one of the 5 set screw caps and one of the 5 set of brushes yesterday.
Now we will see how long it takes to get them from China.
Good deal on both.

STOP USING EBAY BRUSHES!!!

Yesterday my cut motor stopped. Sure enough the brushes were shot! The copper tether is too long as well the brushes wore to nothing and the spring contacted the cut motor!! I replaced them but now the cut motor is throwing sparks!!! NOT GOOD!!! Sorry for all the problems!! Lesson learned!!

The Commutator and brushes will throw some sparks normally, it is knowing what is acceptable or normal that is the question.... Removing the new Flat Bottom Brushes and finding a surface like the commutator and putting some very fine sandpaper on it and sanding a curve will help.

Also check the commutator for Carbon as in Conductive Carbon Arcs between the copper lamination. In the Navy we had a Growler to check that... A magnetic device that induced AC into the rotor and any shorts would be felt and seen in the as the armature was turned.
