In windows explorer, right click on your .mpc and select 'open with' then 'choose default program'. You should be able to browse to the carvewright 'gui.exe' to open it and let it recognize that you want to use that to open .mpc files instead of paint. Somehow your default got messed up.

You could also open the carvewright program, and then do a File - open and browse to the one you want

I have tried to right click, but the same thing comes up "Paint can not read this file" I have open - open in new tab and open
in windows but no open with. I am unsure how to open a file in the carvewright program to let me open the mpc on the pattern sharing forum. Jim

1- Right clock on the MPC Icon and select 'Properties'
2- Under the 'General' tab click Change. See Step-1.jpg attached
56305

3- See Step-2.jpg. Click 'Browse' and navigate to the Program Files (x86) directory as shown in Step-3.jpg

56306
4- choose GUI.exe

56307

OK out of the dialog boxes. When you are finished the look of the Icon should change to the Designer Icon. If this happens you have success!

Hope this helps.

Some times you need to hold down the SHIFT key while right-clicking to have the "open with" option.

No matter what I try I do not get a window that opens with a change option, it does say general but no options. Jim

Have you tried going to the control panel, then default programs, then click the file type you want to assign.

If you are using WINDOWS 7:

See this video: http://windows.microsoft.com/is-IS/windows7/Change-which-programs-Windows-uses-by-default

A (http://windows.microsoft.com/is-IS/windows-vista/Change-which-programs-Windows-uses-by-default)ll I did was go to my SEARCH ENGINE (in my case it was Google Chrome) and type in: change default program in (operating system type)

You might also want to make sure it also opens the following file types that are used by Project Designer:

.mpc (project file)
.ptn (pattern file)
.mpl (designer license file)
.mpw (scanned artwork file)
.mpn (pattern collection file)
.mwm (firmware file for machine)

The following files types can be opened through their programs: (clicking on this file type will not open it)
.sws (stl working file) STL Importer
.dws (dxf working file) DXF Importer

Sounds like maybe it's not opening through your internet browser and you just need to save it to your hard drive first? Mine automatically go to my 'Downloads' directory, and will open the Carvewright program. Can you do a 'save as' when you right click on it?

I would definitely suspect there is a simple solution here- if you would like someone to walk you through it, there is often someone around on the CNC art guild chat located here
