Scan probe problems

I've been scanning for a few days, so far it has worked pretty good. However I scanned a mermaid I carved (by hand) into a cabinet drawer and the scan has a bunch of lines in it that are not in the carving.

As you can see there are quite a few lines around her face. The original carving is clearcoated and is very smooth.

Any ideas on what went wrong or how to fix or avoid this?

I'll post the file in the sticky. If you carve it would you post a picture of the carving? I'd like to see if the lines are in the actual carving.
