I finally found a local wood provider. He is an avid woodworker and mills trees brought to him, or goes to your house and mills them. He has a lot of wood! Today, I was invited into the inner sanctum... his personal stash of some of the most beautiful wood I have ever seen! After drooling all over the curly Birch, and Spalted Hickory, not to mention the crazy exotics that I can't pronounce. Zebra wood, tiger wood,Ebony, Ivory wood, it was a very impressive collection and his knowledge of each wood was seemed limitless. Seemed being the key word. He had a stack of heavily figured almost oak grained wood. But the base is white and the Grain goes from creamy caramel color, to almost a walnut color. The grain has some spalting. And the grain is surrounded by a purple hue. When I asked him what it was, he laughed and said, "You got me! I haven't a clue!" He sold me a piece of it, and I could tell he was unsure about selling it to me. He made me promise not to use anything but Danish Oil to finish it. the board 15.5" wide, 1.25" thick and 78" long. He sold it to me for $30!! I am saving it for something special! Maybe a Christmas present for LOML. I thought I would post it here, and get a consensus of what it might be. Thanks in advance for your help!

I've got some of that in my shop as a matter of fact

latin name
lignum dunnous

"dunno" wood.

It takes on several different forms, and the bark can look quite different. It works quite well for small boxes, pen blanks, and tool handles.

If all else fails and you are seriously curious, you can send up to 5 samples per year to the forestry service for identification for free (as long as you are a US citizen)

http://www.fpl.fs.fed.us/research/centers/woodanatomy/wood_idfactsheet.php

:) of course I'm kidding on the latin name, but am actually serious about the free id from the forestry service.

Strangely enough... I think I found it! Maybe Spalted HackBerry? I would really love to know! But not badly enough to send a 1 x 3 x 6 sample... I am gonna hoard this board! LOL

Good for you, badbert. It sounds like you received a great deal and it sure is a beautiful piece of wood. Not sure what kind it is, but it will certainly make a beautiful project. I agree with your thoughts for a special one....

UH OH!! How ironic is that! Yesterday I woke up from a nap and my nose started hemorrhaging. I went to the ER, they got it to stop, but I have to follow up with my PCP tuesday. It was before I purchased "this" wood. But I do like to use Recycled wood...

LOL Glad my funny didn't offend. I do appreciate your guess though! I bet you have seen some weird woods. And since I have your ear... your instruments are incredibly beautiful.

Here's (http://www.wood-database.com/lumber-identification/hardwoods/butternut/#pics) my best guess.

It's got some features of some of the "Poplar" I've seen.

I would honestly guess pecan. It has a grain and color pattern very similar to hickory at times, but with less of a reddish tint to it. It's so hard to tell a wood type by photograph. I work with hundreds of types of wood and still come across species that I have never heard of. I had a piece that I made into a fountain pen that looked like spalted cocobolo, though I have never heard of such a thing, with the spalting looking like gold streaks. Good luck, it's a beautiful piece of wood!

Well not sure if I want to tackle this hardwood on my old (on its last leg) A model. I hope to order my new C model in under two months, but this piece of wood is just begging to be carved.

OK name that wood!61766

Bert, I'm going on the assumption your source slab cut that tree somewhere in your area so that seems to eliminate some of the woods I'd have guessed. My first guess would be a Poplar tree that grew near water or at least fairly moist soil to account for the coloration difference between heart wood and sap wood. Regardless of the final identification it is a beautiful board. Do let us see what you create some day Sir.

Interesting guesses, and good one's. But I think I must of misled you. I started building a second home and that is where the boards come from and where I brought my old Carvewright. I have planed 3 of the 6 (10"x1"x10') boards and my planer is having issues. The internet says it has a hardness of 1,970 lbf (8,780 N). Not sure what that means. So I think it could be too hard for the Carvewight A model. I have no intentions of bringing down my new machine when I get it.

OK hint time. On google earth cut and past this address below and you can see my winter home where the boards come from. They all look like the picture! One has a yellow 1" line that snakes through it and its really nice looking.

Zircote. If you look on my hardwood lumber page http://kansaswood.com/Lumber.html clear down at the bottom you will find a pic of wood just like it.

Busted. It is Zircote.
Anyone ever carved it before?

I still think it looks like Bocote...

http://www.bellforestproducts.com/bocote/

Ahhh...looky what I found...they look almost alike, and are related (apparently):

"Bocote is related to Ziricote and possesses some similar characteristics including black lines, density, and overall appearance. This Central American hardwood is more plentiful than Ziricote so the cost is 25-35% less. Occasionally boards will have Birdseye figure, beautiful swirling patterns, and/or good variegation. Yellows fade to a tobacco brown while blacks remain. The wood is exceptional to turn, with a natural silky smooth polish that is easily attainable."

Well just finished making this kitchen table. Anyone guess this Central American Hard Wood?
Now for the final step, I am carving the project of the month "wheel barrel" project for a centre piece.
P.S. it took 3 guys to bring in the table. Barely. And the chairs weight a tonne.

Well at least badbert guessed. Its "Grenadilla" wood from Central America, not to be confused with the black African wood of the same species. Can't show my wheel barrow since I broke my 1/8th inch cutting bit on the wheels. Its pretty hard ans super heavy!

Hope you liked it though. Their is always wood for that special project.

peep here is a suggestion, get an airboat and go get some swamp cypress! LOL Seriously. Big Box stores that sell Hardwood flooring. Always have damaged or broken bundles. They usually sell them at a big discount. But you have to ask. I bought a bundle of white oak for $20. It takes a little work doing the glue-ups, but you can have some beautiful wood.
