Looks like an awesome start! The wood and grain selection should be a great looking piece.

As I've promised a violin to my son, I'm watching your project with much interest... looks great so far

The wood that I used was some old maple that had gotten wet. Some of it was so rotten that had through it in the fire. I used it because it was the cheapest wood that I had in my shop. I think it is a pretty wood. I hope it looks as good after it is finished.

Is the lower part of the maple spalted? How will that affect the sound? Do you have to carve it to a certain thickness? Is there a formula somewhere that Luthiers use? Sorry for the questions. Just inspired by that beautiful carve!

I am trying to make it as thin as I can some where around 1/8 thick. As far as the sound I am getting my instructions from my friend who can play the violin very well.
For me this is strange territory. I am not even sure that this is project that will ever be finished. It is fun trying. Wish me luck.
