View Full Version : IGS files into CW software?

I have 3D models (in IGS format, typically used by Solidworks) that I'd like to import into the CW software. Has anyone done this? I assume there's a way to transmit the file into DXF, then use the DXF importer, but I'm listening to the experts!

Thanks,
jkpq45

Unless STL Importer is the appropriate software. Are these 3d models or 2d vectors? STL for 3d; DXF for 2d.

The 3D models I have are in IGS format--found a piece of software called Rhino 3D (http://www.rhino3d.com/download.htm) and we'll see if I can convert to STL.

You may have to do either "Export As" or "Save As".

Found a 3D image on grabcad.com of a rifle stock--used Rhino3D to convert to STL. Can someone convert the STL to a Carvewright software file, or is that against the terms of service? I don't own the STL converter/importer myself, so I wouldn't know.

Just a noob trying to learn--thanks for all the guidance!

edit: Tried uploading the STL but it's too large at ~23 MB. Back to the drawing board, so to speak.

edit: See post #38 for IGS file (3D image I started with.)

Will it zip? or upload it to a file sharing site (mediafire.com) and post a link

Hello Mr. Harris,

Here's a link to the file in question:

Thanks,

I had to request access to the file..

I imported it but it does not look like a gun stock to me..

Screen capture of the import.

Yeah I got the same thing when I tried. Not sure what happened....

Darn. Conversion of the original (IGS) file to STL must've not worked out. I'll post the IGS in case anyone wants to play with it:

Might try exporting the file in Rhino to a gray scale image.

Not the stock of any rifle I've ever shot before.

Look like a cross bow stock.

It's an Anschutz model--recently popped up in my mind as a lot of Olympians use it for the biathlon and other shooting sports:

And I have been wanting to learn to play the violin and guitar, so I can justify buying one of your's...

Okay, enough of the hijack. That is a much better image. Had never heard of the Anschutz model until now. Not really a gun guy.

Always happy to be claimed! I do my best to give cnsranch a hard time--easy since he's my "Pa!"

I figure if we ever get this rifle stock carving thing worked out, we could take them and your innovative "buggy signs" to the wood shows and literally be hundredaires by Christmas!

I can see the swanky evening soirees now--except instead of Champagne and caviar, we'll be serving homebrew and pond-raised catfish!

That's why the name was so similar that I thought cnsranch was emailing me to get him access to the forum. Had me there...

What is the pulley wheel in the stock used for? (see back section below the raised part of stock)

?????? Hmmm I thought we where talking about rife stocks and STL's. In fact Joe's dad was asking me to locate one for him and i to work on, and If your saying that i am hijacking this tread thats cool good luck on you gun.

eelamb, that's a knurled metal wheel that, when turned, raises and lowers the comb (raised part on the stock). It allows adjustment to fit the shooter's cheek and allow proper alignment with the sighting device.

I'm still working with the one CAD package to which I have access that will allow opening the IGS file; just trying to get a gradient image per PCW's suggestion.

Liquidguitars, I've been a fan of your work for the several years I've been lurking on the site. I'll keep my eyes open for Kentucky Rifle plans.

Rhino should give you options to save as or export as a bitmap.. (tif or bmp file). bmp file will import in designer software but the tif will need to be converted to a file format that the CW will accept without the optional CW software. A PNG or BMP format would be the best choice suited for a import into the designer software.

Your dads a hoot.

I was the hijack, not you. You were on topic, I was off...

If you are planning to carve this stock, here is the top view pattern.

May as well add both the side and top on one post.

PCW I used blender to import the stl file, then exported using new name. Then designer to open that file, and slice. I admit I did use zb to smooth some of the first image, then meshlab to convert the obj to stl again.

jkpq45, how big is the igs file? Is it possible to zip it and upload that file. I would like to see how Moi3d handles opening the igs file.

I'd say pretty well eddie! I'll let you play around with it more as you are far more advanced than I with MOI.

jkpq45, thanks, I thought there were some parts missing in the conversion from igs to stl. MoI3d read it great and created a nice stl file for importing into designer, with nice clean mesh. Looked like some reversed normals did not convert right.

Here is the same stock patterns but corrected. opened in Moi3d, saved as stl, imported into designer and sliced.
