I think most of us have wondered how a gear drive might work on this fixture. Well I had to try just for the fun of it. I have carved 2 pieces with OK results but not what I am looking for yet. There is always a problem with chips so I am still working around some of the variables. I have developed several MPC's that carve the gear and rack. We need to have the ability to make our own spare parts, right?
I wanted to share pic that would show what I am trying. I had to try this because I could not get it out of my head! So here it is ..... ( wish me luck! )

Thanks for looking!

I can see where chips and dust would b e a problem, but looks like tracking would be more precise - and the masking tape won't help here.

Looking at that I wonder if you could use a larger belt like the Y belt and a rack and pinion further away from the cutting action.... Same rack and pinion just a belt to the actual moving element.... A Bearing unit could be mounted to the side structure and a Spring loaded release on the far side.... The reason I mention this is that when I get this Mild Solvent Printer I am going to make a version of this jig to print round things like Aluminum Water Bottles and the such.... With a 6 inch high area it will be very flexible. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Tpzt1G2v-c

This is another take on the Rotary Jig.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjcWG9irwsw&feature=related and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKoZcNLYSsg&feature=related

I even wonder with the CW, if you could remove one or both of the sand paper trays and make a version that drives direct from the X gearbox with brass roller feedback...

Don't see any advantage of this as what has been designed works just fine. Just thinking... Only 1 Troubleshooting post this weekend...
