Just carved this in cherry. Need to finish it yet, was thinking letting it sit in the sun a few weeks and then just clear lacquer.

Cherry is my favorite local wood and your idea above is my favorite finish for cherry, but it doesn't even take a few weeks for it to darken up, I sun tanned some last summer and it looked great even after 4 or 5 days.
