Play with the merge style under the carving menu.

having problems with the merge function going to have to look in the tips and tricks on using it.

here is a picture of the carve from Bergerud file.

I made a sled to put it on and to carve but forgot to put two sided tape on the bottom. When it drilled the center out it spun and broke my bit.

trying another carve with a few mods and This time i double side tape it down.

Here is one that just uses the 1/2" bit the carve time is 15 min just make sure your bits are sharp...

I did not think you were going to carve it! I just offered it so you would see how to use the merge. I only put about a minute into it. I think if I was going to make such a shape, I would actually mill it out instead of carve it. It would be faster and the sides would be smoother and vertical. Here is a 5 minute effort. Just an example! Correct the dimensions and check it over carefully if you mill it. (the mill circles are 1/8 apart so you might get some paper thin rings between them.)

Thats cool Berg,

looks like the 1/8 mill and the 1/2 mill takes around the same time.. 00.14.56

I played with it some,
i tried messing with the merge function and I need to read up on it more and watch bud videos. I
I have my wife sister over and the computer in the shop is a little slow to watch videos.
if I keep noise going no one comes out to the shop.

Here is some editing i did to the pattern you posted earlier bergerud

hanks for your help I will read up on doing the merge function when everyone leaves. The way it looks they may never leave.

I do have the 3/16 bit also would that also work, instead of the 1/8?

Sure, the 3/16" would be even faster. Looks like I am spinning my wheels here: looks like you are done!

Nice job, the best way to keep a merge style from filling in other patterns is to use " groups" to selectively control the merging efects of two or more additives objects...

Ill still have to figure out how to make this pattern my self, and looking at your pattern and drawing it out my self is helping. I have to figure out the merge function and it looks like the SIL is leaving now I can get in the house and look it up.

I haven't ran my carvewright for awhile figure I would try something different and kill some time while everyone was over here.

what is different when you mill vs carve?

mill term in this case is using a spline path to cut out a area, " look at the router tool for options" where a carve uses the raster image and cuts " right to left"...

Looks good to me. (Remember the max pass depth on the cutout.) If you are going to make more of these, I would consider the milling method. It is faster, the result is better, and, it is probably easier on the machine. You can use the 1/8, 3/16, 3/8, or even as LG suggested, the 1/2" bit.

what is different when you mill vs carve?Sometimes the Mill process can save tons of time!
You use the straight bits (best size for the job), which gives you a upright edge rather than an angled edge.
My "Download" link, below, has a lesson titled "Pockets and Conforming Vectors". This lesson builds on two Tips & Tricks (issue # 35 & 36). Both of these T&Ts are video files.

Steve,
Thanks but i was trying to layout out a turkey pot.
But i do like the way the inside does the taper from the center to the outer ridge.
