The final teacher gift for this year is a wine bottle balancer for my youngest son's teacher/our friend. We know she would not be offended by this, and hopefully she'll enjoy it and the bottle that goes with it!
The carve was very quick (3 mins) - I carved it then sprayed the letters with Marsh spray ink (which sits on the surface of the wood instead of "creeping"-- It planed off very cleanly--

The rest is easy, cut 2 45 degree angles on the ends and drill a 1.5 inch hole (I used a colt maxicut forstner bit) then round over the hole and sides with a router bit and then spray with lacquer.
