Most of us have seen this in the project gallery, this has always been a favorite so I carved it to give to my parents for Mother's and Father's Dad.

So here's my take on this wonderful carving53033

Another outstanding carve for a pattern that belongs in the "hall of fame"

Well done Chief,

Perry, you can find it here -- along with a few examples folks have carved.
It's listed in several threads like this one.

Thanks Ken, this will be my next project over the summer. I have 3 months to get ready for the next show.
I see BJ sells those slabs and I am going to contact him and maybe make a trip up there to pick up some.
I have always wanted to do some slabs. I see some good ideas for the cajun country theme and maybe on cypress slabs too.
Just remember as Jason would say "learn to earn".
Oh by the way the Joseph and the boy Jesus ptn, it was I that had MT create that one for me. My brother-in-law
wanted to use it on a project we did to gether some time back.
Thanks for the info

I just love this carving, I have done it a good number of times.

What color stain did you use? Like the look of the cross with that stain.

Very very nice work Chief.

Very very nice work Chief.

Minwax Early American for the cross , highlighted the face with dark walnut, then went over it with the Early American - this gives it just enough definition to have it stand out a bit.

That combination of stain colors sure turned out well, from my view point.

One can get some really go looks by doing what you did or layering stains on back grounds.

Thank you Chief.

Here's another style that has done very well for me and carves real nice. It's also one that was on Forum long ago.

It looks great! I really like the way they carve out in cedar. As for the PTN being mine... I can't take the credit. Someone posted it on the forum some time ago and my "thanks" goes out to that person (whomever you are.... ) :) It was back in the days when people didn't mind sharing and never thought things would get out of hand. Enjoy the pattern !
Note:............... keep an eye out and see how long it takes for someone to put it up on ebay now.

with or without Centerline Text.

Ps. It looks Great Carved in Cedar!

Tom,

Dose the mpc call for a 1" stock or could you use 3/4" for carve and cut out?

I did not get to the down load last night to check it out.

Hi Robert,
It does and the face is set at .75. I changed that to .65 and it decreased to carving to by about 20 minutes.
If you change it more and you start to loose detail. You can change board size but I don't think it will look as nice without that extra thickness.

Good Morning Tom,

Thanks for the info. I will leave it as is.

I'll just surface plane a board down to 1"

Your carving looks really good.

Hi Roger,

I had forgotten that I originally posted the board thickness at 1" -- I had been carving them
at the time, in Red and White Oak stair tread cut-offs that all measured a true full 1".
Like Tom mentioned .75" will work fine if the depth of the carving is reduced. -- It's just a matter of Choice

Ken,

If I am understanding what you are saying.

If I reduce the carving to .65 it will carve ok on a .75" thick board? Am I missing something?
