...and none too soon. Look at the date, I'd better get packing!

Walnut with maple keys and a flame maple bottom. Maloof's Oil/Varnish blend finish.

Thanks to the creators of the interlocking ring and cactus patterns!

(For fun, play "Where's the CW" with these photo's.;))

Great job on the box, the talent that you have to begin with and then you
enhance it when you add the carvings,

Great job on the box. I am sure the lucky couple will enjoy it.
Do you mind me asking, where did you get the hinges? I have been looking for some like those but haven't had any luck

Thanks for the comments everyone! I'm pretty happy with the way that it turned out. Mike--I got the hinges from Rockler, but you can find 'em a lot of places...just google "side rail brass hinge" and you should come up with a list.

Beautiful box. Very nice work. Looks like the hinges were fitted perfectly also. Second shelf. Oh, not the box, the CW.

Thanks Terry. And you're close on the CW...it's on a flip top stand hanging upside down in the photos...

Verrrrrrry nice! How do you apply the finish? I've used Maloof's finish before and like it but I suspect I'm not applying it quite 'right'...

David--it's a wiping varnish. As the can suggested, I sanded to 400 grit, then buffed it with 0000 steel wool. Then just wipe it on heavily with a cotton rag, wait a few minutes, then wipe it all back off. The key is to get all of it back off--wipe it two or three times with a cloth or paper towels--only leaving what has soaked into the wood. Wait 24 hours, and repeat. Apply 3 or 4 coats (I did 3 'cause I ran out of days!). I actually sanded in the 2nd coat with 600 grit w/d paper, but I'm not sure that's necessary. They also sell a oil/wax blend that can be used on top, but I didn't feel the need.

You can make your own--the finish is simply 1/3 boiled linseed oil, 1/3 tung oil, and 1/3 poly, although if I made it myself I'd use another type of varnish.

Thanks - knew I was 'off' a bit on the way I was doing it. Keep wanting the finish to build up a bit - old habits die hard...
