With the number of registerd users nearing 700 and posts nearing 5,000 it can be really difficult to search through everything to find a post where someone shared a pattern file (.ptn), doubly so if you are a new member. I thought it might be nice to have a single thread to act as a depot for the pattern files folks would like to share. If you are sharing a pattern here please make sure it is NOT a commercial pattern.

READ THIS VERY CAREFULLY:
Pattern files have to be 'zipped' before being uploaded to the forum; which means you need to 'un-zip' the file after you download it. I borrowed the excellent picture that Jon Jantz (look just below here) posted the other day that shows how to add pattern files to your 'Favorites' folder in Designer. In words: Open Designer, click on the 'Shell' icon to open up the patterns, right click on "Favorites", click on "Import", navigate to where you saved you pattern.

I have a request, would someone mind writing up a short and simple, how to zip and unzip a file (PC and MAC) for those folks who may not know yet. I will write up a short how to on organizing the 'Favorites' folder and we can add them here as instructions for everyone.

It would be nice to have a picture to be displayed in the post for any patterns you are sharing. This makes it easier for all to see if it is something that they are interested in downloading.

PLEASE NOTE: Let's try to keep this thread only for pattern files. I will reguraly delete or move any other content.

I would like to thank all of you, yes even you!!

I have found every one here to be selfless and very helpful I can only hope as time goes on that I can contribute to what I am sure will be a growing number of newbies as you have helped me.

in that spirit I have received help from Jon in designing this plaque that you all should feel free to use if you like it. I belong to a 8 ball pool league and I am going to present this to the comittee to see if they would consider buying some from me as awards for the tops in the league.

when looking at it imagine it hanging on the wall with the rack of balls on top and just below that a name plate of some sort.

I am sure you will get the idea.

Thanks again
Tim

This was my first scan. I did a cutout on the back for the glass etc, but won't include it w/ this. I think it's easier (for me) to rout the back with a Bosch Colt.

I got my machine the other day. The scanning probe came in today so I built a scanning sled. This is quite cool, the only thing missing was Majel Barrett saying "Initializing scan"
http://www.PhotoShare.co.nz/PhotoShareGallery1/100503/108025/PICT00664840.jpg
I built the sides 2¼" above the top of the sled. I discovered though if you want to scan within 1½" of either side of the sled the sides can't be more than about 1-5/8" tall or the wire on the probe hits. I am making another ½" board to screw on top of mine so I can scan closer to the edges.

Here's a molding I had laying around that I scanned. Took over 5 hours to scan.
http://www.PhotoShare.co.nz/PhotoShareGallery1/100503/108025/scan64.jpg
The original size was 17.99" on the long side (don't know if that matters) and needs to be rotated 90° (not sure how to do that with the imported scan yet , all new to me.)

I have a few carvings that I have made (manually with a dremil type tool) that I plan to attempt to scan. The ones that will fit in the machine anyway.

Thanks ~Mike

Here's a Harley logo

Got it from www.brandsoftheworld.com
in EPS format, brought it in to CorelDRAW made it larger by stretching, copied, then imported in to CW. Took all of a couple minutes.

PS, BOTW is in a different country (Russia, I believe) that doesn't follow the US's copywrite laws. So just because you get a logo, doesn't mean you have the right to use it. I personally don't worry about making gifts, but if you make a bunch and sell, you may eventually get in a little trouble.

This is a scan of a goofy carpenter guy I made a few years ago.

I had a bit of trouble while scanning this the hot glue let go at the top. In the pattern editor I tried to clean it up a little, that would be something I'd like to add to the wish list, a clone tool. If anyone can clean this up better please repost it.

Took 16 hours to scan and 20minutes to download from the card.

This is a scan of a picture frame. I didn't scan the back so it would need to be done either with the carvewright or by hand to fit the glass into a rabbit. The original scan size was 1.05" deep 6.94" x 8.41"

How would a person cut this out of say a 1" thick board, would I need a backer to keep the machine from cutting into itself?

Please let me know if these are working out, I thought I'd get all my scanning out of the way before I started using the machine to carve.

This is a scan of a mermaid I carved ( with dremil tools) into a cabinet drawer front. The scan came out a bit odd, has some lines in the face area that aren't in the carving. I'm attaching a picture of the original carving as well, it's on red oak. Scan size is 4.73" x 15.29" x .588"

If anyone carves this with the machine, would you mind posting a picture of the carving in the gallery and let me know if the lines cause any problems?

I have an old program Xara 3D 4.0 I've been messing with it a little to see if it would render anything useable for the CarveWright. I think it works pretty well for flat black & white solids. Here's one I made with it. Text and simple objects seem to work to round the edges or bevel the edges. I don't think it would work for anything very complex.

Just a name but once I save the settings in Xara I can use any font or name that looks good. Then I just import it, save it to the favorites, right click it and export as a ptn file.

I'm waiting for the CarveWright to finish a scan so I decided to try something. I had a carved square applique, I scanned it in greyscale on my flatbed scanner, did a smooth and soften in my photoediting software and imported it into CarveWright. Here is what I came up with, at some point I will have to scan this with the CarveWright and see if it does better.

This is a scan of a hand mirror I made a while back. The band around the back was actually walnut, the mirror body was oak, and the rose was bloodwood. I'm not sure how to carve the other side with the machine, but I guess it could be done pretty easily with a dremil tool.

Just wanted to add a picture of Ted Grinnell's Lighthouse and wheel, carved out. This is straight from the machine.
Thank you Ted for posting, my wife loves it. Excuse the defects in the board, this is popular which has been biscuit jointed together, and was a test piece. I hope to get round to staining later on.
The picture looks darker than it should be, but we had to turn off the flash, the flash just brightened it to much to see the detail.

This is one I scanned from the doors I spoke about. I may not scan any more of them as the scanner does a number on the paint and I would hate to destroy my clients artwork with out their permission. A major part of the beauty of the carvings is the way in which they were painted/finished. That is at 5.3 x 1 3/4"

(Unzip the ptn file before importing into your Favorites)

Hello,

I created a pattern for both sides of the Indian Head penny. Also, I used the "smoothing" function on both patterns to give what I think would be a better carve.

These coin patterns are intended to be carved large so that the 1/16" bit can capture most of the detail. Carve too small and the details will probably not do well. I envisioned carving each side of the coin on a board 11.25 x 11.25, but you could experiment with smaller sizes if you wish.

If anyone wants to try to carve 'em, please let me know how they work out! For the old penny, I also thought a copper metaillic paint, antiqued over with a dark wood stain might be nice.

I'll make a couple more patterns of other old coins if the interest is there.

Here is one for any of you who have friends who are Red Hatters. A unique group of ladies that are a joy to be around. I am hoping that this will catch on and provide some "payments" on my CarveWright

The sign is one that, those of you follow the Corel Tutorials by Jon will recognize...... OK so I am not original LOL. With a few adaptations I have made it into a project that you can swap names out easily for different signs. Those of you who use Corel will be able to do just the name portion and add the transition gradient for the curved or beveled effects on the letters. Otherwise you can use the CarveWright text feature for letters as shown on pattern.

Included below are:
Picture from Designer of the MPC file.
The MPC file with generic name
The pattern file of just the Red Had digitized in Corel for any other project.

If anyone wants any other form of this project or parts of it, email me and I will try to help. Photos will be posted in the gallery as soon as I get the finish applied.

Here are two projects I've been working on.

The US quarter map is from the map previously posted here. I added a couple of patterns (you can delete the heart and name ;) ), fixed the size of the coin holes and added the 50th state hole. The previous one has only 49 holes...
It doesn't look too bad. The quarter holes are just slightly large. They may fill in with paint or clear when finished? I sized them in Designer and they came out large... The map itself is a bit rough and I can't modify it. It would be nice to have a better map... Maybe I should also mention that this takes 6 1/2 hours to carve! But I and my daughter greatly appreciate the nice person who uploaded the original. Thank you thaley!

The second project is a box to hold the Carvewright PC card. May not really be useful, but the mahcine is new to me and I needed an idea to carve... This box has a carved lip on the inside that holds the two pieces together. The dimensioning in Designer worked great for this. It's a work in-progress, not finished but may be fun to see or use...

Just thought I'd give back a little after living here for a few weeks and carving for 20+ hours :p

Ask and ye shall receive. (did somebody say 6 1/2 hours?)

The attached file will carve in 1:35:35. Please do not use the signet without my name attached.
The map of course is easy to come by, but I spent several hours re-doing it as splines. The quarter holes are (within the limits of the machine's accuracy) the exact size of the quarter per US specifications.
You may use the map without my signet if you prefer, but please respect that the signet and name should remain together..

And Thanks also to the original poster, who gave me the idea to create this (probably without realizing it). This is not a modification to his (or her?) original, just my attempt to have something that carves faster.

Hopefully it will save some carving time for other projects, and prove useful to
some of you.

Cheers,

Bladesmith

Here is a little step stool I worked up in designer if anyone wants to try it.
The holes are drilled thru 1/8" dia. and countersunk 3/8" dia. x 0.300 deep for screwing the seat and a runner on each side. The countersunk holes can be plugged with 3/8" plugs.
I plan on cutting the childs name out in the seat.

I have not tried this design yet so let me know if it's not right.

Have had my machine a while, like most here I just never seem to have enough time. Got my scanner a couple of weeks ago, finally made a sled and tried a couple of items. Found the stag original at an auction, is metal and apparently was fastened to something. Nice flat back, couldn't get any lower on the neck, exceeded thickness limits. Crab is pewter, something my wife had. Possibly a paperweight?
Hope the quality is OK, my first attempts to edit out the background. Really enjoy this forum and it is a pleasure to see the open sharing along with the willingness of all to help each other. THX

I am a professional graphic designer by day... and this is my collection of typographic ornaments and dingbats that I have been compiling for the last few months... it has everything from word logos to swashes...in the neighborhood 200-300 elements... it is in an eps format so you'll need vector editing software to open it... this would take forever for me to get into designer... and all would be 2-d... .but they will really make text look good when used with it.

but what you should do is pick and choose which image you want.... then scale it up and export as a png ... and do your thing... with the designer thing

but unfortunatly you'll have to right click the following link to download the file(or save file as).. cause it is about 5mb and is too big to upload to this forum

I changed the stool pattern posted previously to add a carving. If you use this I would go a little shallower on the carving.

Also the second file is brackets I laid out for the stool. There are four 'cause I am making two stools. The spiral carves on both sides and uses the 90 degree bit.

Home Depot sells a knotty pine glue up in 24" x 48" size for 16 bucks.
Got two stools and change out of the one piece. Seat was made to 7" x 12" with my grandsons names Centerline carved in it (love that CL).

thanks for posting the pattern for the stool. What I don't understand is how it is totally put together with the brackets and the stool. My granddaughter is having an event coming up and would like to make one for her. Made this sign for a neighbor.

First design gave me a ignore-autojig-manual error when I went to upload.

Wanted to use 1x8 and not have to go to next size.

When you use designer the top of the project comes out on the key board side of the machine. The arched cut out is what caused the error.

Laid out the sign in designer upside down, which put the cut on the other side of the machine.

Now carves fine.

Well, I always waste wood, so I would have gone to a 1x10 board, but you can also let the machine size to fit the board your using. In your case, even using a 1 x 10 might give you the same error... For some reason the machine wants a lot of extra space on the sides... In this case I understand because of the cut-through.

It sounds like flipping the board tricks the machine... Good to know...

Don't know how well this cross will carve. The fretwork areas are very small but it sure is pretty. You will need to adjust your depth on the Cherubs PTN. The scan depth was over 1" and I didn't know at the time that I should've change the depth when saving. You can adjust it easily with in designer itself.

Here is another picture that, I think, Lin has correctly identified as a chip carving. All I know is that they carve very quickly and they carve well in soft (i.e. cheap) wood using only one bit. This would probably go well on a plate, a box lid or even a clock if you drill a hole in the middle.

Keenosan
09-07-2007, 11:20 PM
Lin,
Here is another one that is significantly more simple than the other one and should carve in ten minutes or less, judging by what the others have been taking me. You could easily carve two in your 30 minute time constraint with your scrolling group.

Thank all of you for your kind words. I hope these will be of use to someone. I have a 3D Router Carver that I didn't use much because it was such a pain in the behind to set up (and the pattern templates were so darned expensive) but the CW is so much easier and looks just as good if not better. Also, I can do all of the designs with the CW that I could do with the 3D Router Creator with any embellishment that I want to add!

[QUOTE
Is there any way to reduce them or enlarge them? I tried selecting all the components and grouping them, but that did not seem to work. I've been making some small boxes, for Christmas gifts, and I'd like to use the Hummingbird an the "Chip Carving" patterns - but I would like to reduce the size to fit - say a 5"x7" top. Just wondering :p[/QUOTE]

Cajunpen,

The best way that I've found to resize the whole thing is to click: Edit, then: Select all, then, when the yellow box comes up on the picture, drag one of the corners with your mouse to make it larger or smaller. With some of the elaborate pictures, this is too much info for the software and it crashes. If you have trouble, just tell me what size you need of which picture and I'll post a smaller version. Just a word to the wise, on some of them, if you decrease the size a lot, you'll have to lessen the depth values on some of the lines. I hope this helps; it's kind of a two-dollar answer to a 75-cent question, but I have a problem with verbosity.

Edit: Here are both files on 5" wide boards.

Lin, you were right! These two and the two in the next post were based on free stained glass patterns I found on the web. I carved the Doves in pine and it turned out fine. Okay, I've been posting this stuff now for a couple of months. Is anyone out there besides me and Cajunpen using them to carve things? It takes quite a bit of time to make them and I think that some of them are as good as some of the patterns that I've seen for sale, but if no one is using them, it would be a lot simpler to email them to the one or two people who are using them and use my time to carve more things with my CW. The reason that I've been doing it is because there is simply not much out there on the net that can be used by the CW, and most of what is out there is beyond my limited price range. I'm not in it for the money, so I have no other way to recoup the money that I would have to pay for patterns and I thought that there might be others in my position. Maybe I was wrong.

I promised more Irish stuff. The Claddagh is an ancient Irish symbol; the crown signifies loyalty, the hands friendship, and the heart love.

Lin,

This is what I was talking about with "simulated" intarsia. The picture has six different levels of relief and when you carve it in CW, it looks like you did intarsia for real.

JOHNB and gtj44,

This morning while looking through the Gallery,
I saw your post of the Heart with Wings and remembered the Helmet on the Cross file posted the other day.
And for several moments, thought of all those, including some guys I knew, "who gave up their tomorrows, so we could have our today’s."
I really hope you don’t mind, but I combined your files as a carving to help remind me more often.

Thanks

I like no. 3 the best, but then I wouldn't accept either <g>. Your girlfriend, however, might just like diamonds more. I know mine did. but that was before the CarveWright was around too.

Bob

What you have is fine but with the posting before yours and the proposal that you have put :cool:together is the one I like.

Here is the rest of my daughter's present. The front and back are the same (Chip Box 02) and the two sides are the same (Chip Box 03.) I made her box 9"X15"X6", but you can make one whatever size you want by stretching and compressing the patterns.

Hi Ken,

Got some plans for combining Michael's wreath and Dusty’s pine cones?

Remember if someone has posted an mpc file, and they don't mind.
You can open the cut list and do a copy on the cut or ptn and drop it into your own mpc project.

CarveWright sent me the extension because I had to change to the 14 pin cable, which moves your probe cable to the left side of the machine.

I tried to send the pnt file befor but it did not attach. I just tried again and it worked must be operator error. (I get alot of those)

There is a red x in the pnt box of the manage attachments not sure what that means?

Hi John,

The pine cones can be sized, clustered, colored, and carved as separate patterns and placed as appliques on the wreath where ever you may like them.
That way you do the same thing with other independently carved candy canes, little bells, doves, ribbons, toy soldiers,
Like Michael T mentioned or any thing else you might like.
Barb want's to do Little pink and blue bows with the Kids and Grand kids names on them, for their front doors. http://www.carvewright.com/forum/images/icons/icon6.gif

Ps. I'm planing to write the Grand Kid's names on the plain Bulb Ornament
with Gold and Silver marker just before we let them, color and decorate their very own ornament then hang it on the tree.

I tried doing these as raised 3D carvings, but some elements were too thin to carve without breaking off, so I went back to the drawing board and incised them and they worked really well.
