If I do center on both X/Y axis.. Is there a way to cancel both to move the objects after I do that?
I would like to use center on both and then move the object group at will to different places...
If you are talking about in Designer go to the carving list, select the object, or place the curser point on the object and select, click on Layout, hover the curser over center, (first on the list) the arrow over will show both vertical and horizontal as blue, click on either and it will no longer hold to center, go through this process untill you have selected and uncentered each object of concern in each direction of concern. You should be able to select all the object you want to move by chosing the first one, holding the shift key and selecting the rest. You should now be able to move them together, unless one has been held in place by manually typing in a distance from the edge or center.
I apologize if I am oversimplifying or not understanding the question. I well remember once being soooo frusterated with an old computer that took paper tapes on reels with square holes punched to communicate with the machine. (That should tell you how old I really am) I couldn't make the machine work because no one told me you had to pull the paper tape past the first section of square holes that were in a straight line.
Sometimes a thing can be so simple once you already know it that you wouldn't even think to explain it.
Good luck, let us know if this works or if it actually a different problem.

Ken,
Here is a pattern of a wood lathe, if you like.
Thanks, I appreciate your help.
But, when I try to import the pattern Designer says it is corrupt or an invalid file format?

Ken I was able to save and open Blantz's PTN with version 1.151, are you trying to open it with an older version?
Yep! 1.134.
I can't do without reliable centerline so I won't go to 1.15x till they fix it.
Thanks for making me realize why I can't open the file. Dangit, it's a real nice lathe pattern too.
Strange thing here tho. When I try to open yours the error is clear that the file was made with a newer version. When I try to open B Lantz's the error is file corrupted or invalid format.

Ken, I think someone is going to too much cooperative protection, with there programs. I can not open my MPW files with my programs with version 1.151 on my older programs. I run two hard drives when I make patterns on two computer systems. I am seeing in the last two down loads things are not working right

I think they should redo the software and make it work fully so you can use all functions, including centerline, STL and the probe. It sure would make it easier for this 72 year old man – have a good day
I pray and it helps me. We need a good CW unit to make great carvings; the government gives us a hard enough time. BJB
Can you open this one? - it is a older file - if you can I think your system is working OK.

Looking to make a few plaques. Thanks..

Here is a green man I made. It looks like it would be cool at 1.5 inches deep so I have been experimenting with cutting models in 3d software. Also have attched it as a single pattern. On the glue up carve it seems if I add feathering it gets the carve time down.

I continue to be amazed at everything the amazing artists on this forum are producing. On top of that I'm thankful for the many patterns and projects that have been freely shared on here over the years.
I am hopeful that someone can help me with a challenge I'm working on. I'm trying to carve some decorative trim and corner blocks for a built-in set of DVD shelves I am making. I've found some awesome patterns on the forum that I think are going to look beautiful. My problem is I just can't get everything to look or line up right. The moldings and the corner blocks have a twist rope effect that I am trying to look like one rope wrapped around everything. For instance the rope should look like it "flows" from the molding around the corner block back onto the next molding, etc... Unfortunately I am still getting very "hard" edges. Maybe looking at the attached project files it will become more apparent what I'm trying to do.
In advance I want to thank everyone for helping or providing any guidance. Also, thanks to those who created the awesome patterns I'm shamefully trying to use! :D
Thanks again and God bless!

Lots of people have looked, no one's responded, 'cause you're asking a pretty tough question.
Here's what I think -
First problem is that the machine can't carve that close to the edge, so you'd still have edges that aren't as smooth as you want.
Second, I think you'd have to have the original pattern of the rope so you can bring it into Pattern Editor and doctor it there to get it the way you want it - getting the patterns to blend the way you want is almost impossible.

pattern after you have put a carve region rotated at a 45 degree angle set to "0" depth. this will give you the mitered corners you are looking for but you will have to scan the carved section to use as patern. then use 2 of em for a corner and lay the long original over top and move back and forth till they match.

And if you have Adobe Illustrator I believe it has a rope brush you can curve as you wish. Do a search on rope vector brushes?
New Edit:
I looked all over for a vector/brush of a rope and found nothing free.
I did find this that may help if you have photoshop or similar.

Just leave it to Ken to take any design at all and make it work. I fretted over a grandson's tatoo that I wanted to use for his door name sign. Finally had to put it aside. Understand it was to be for a wedding present and was designed by his bride so it was special to them. I really like name signs for wedding presents.

I am going to respond to you in a separate post because I have had some issues with some posts being removed lately. I have saved them in mht files and if it keeps happening I plan on posting the before as well as the after files on a different website. This one is going to be saved as well.
You know I trust your opinion when it comes to woodworking/graphic design and I can't wait to try a multi layer carve.
I think some folks me included want to see what it can do before forking out that kind of money. It just seems to me that the company doesn't want to even promote the software by adding a share category to their site.
Someone said a while back and I can't remember who but it was a control issue or it may have been like a over protective mother or something like that. I just feel sometimes like I can't move without asking LHR first if its OK. Dan

Here's the Pattern for the Recessed Oval
But you can make your own in CW Designer if you like.
The oval with the flat base or shelf is made
by adding a Carved Regain set at "0"
It's really kind of fun to experiment with --

A great source for this type of design are coloring pages on the internet. If you haven't found them yet, there are lots on every kid interst, just type in "free coloring pages (and the name of the subject)" there were lots of cars subjects at www.kids-n-fun.com/coloringpages/Kleurplaat_Cars_61.aspx
Remember, licensed designs are subject to copyrights and can't be resold or used as examples to sell other products.
Free coloring pages are also a great resource for amusing kids on a rainy day.

Do a Google search on shriners and masonic under the images in Google and you will find lots of things on there. I've got a shriners emblem, but don't know how to put it on here as a pattern. If someone could let me know how I'll try it. It was a pattern I got off one of the boards

I have used some of the patterns you folks have kindly put on here so I wanted to try and give back a little. This is a lighthouse clock plack I made in Designer. I carved it on a piece of 19x8x3/4 alder, cut a couple inches off each end, put a classic route around the edge, put a hanger on the back and a 15637 style Klockit insert in for the light. A couple coats of polywipe and it turned out pretty cool. Use it if you want...

Can't help on the free kitchen software, hope there is such an animal. Spent a couple of hours with a buddy Sat Am who runs a nice cabinet shop and just bought the latest. They called him, at a show last fall where it was on sale for $5,000, they offered it for $3,00 with 1 year no interest financing, guess the 'recession' hit them too. Hope there is a program out there that will serve your needs and has reached the point it can be obtained for a minimal price.
Good luck , Rick H.

Just went to the site and it's a great site.. thanks for sharing. Question though.... I went to see the "Fox and Geese" mpc(s). All looked great, but I was wondering if there is a pdf, txt file or some guide in showing how to play the game. Otherwise, it's a great site. Kinda reminds me of a game that my parents played with their friends. It was called "Wahoo". I guess I've heard it called parchesi in some places. The lay out of Fox and Geese looks similar, but had more holes. Brings back alot of fond memories of my parents enjoying themselves.
Thanks for the instruction site Bud. I kinda thought that along with the .mpcs in that folder, there would also be a txt file on how to play the game. Nevertheless, it's still a pretty neat site to get stuff from.

Okay, I tried to reduce the .jpgs and zip the font. Not Shawn's question but I thought someone might like it.
For the leaf one you will have to load the font and type it out. Carves best if at least 2" tall. As a side note, I'd really like to be able use the V bit on this one. But then I'm always imagining things that haven't been figured out yet.

This is going to be my most critical judging of my modelling/ carving as of yet. My 4 year old neice. Love how 4 years olds are brutaly honest. She is absolutely Dora crazy - t-shirts dolls lunchbox anything with Dora. She also loves to help her uncle "polish" his carvings (ie sanding - hope she still likes to polish when she gets a little older) when they come out of the machine. Can't wait to see the look on her face when I pull this one off the machine and ask her to polish it.
I included a single ptn and also 2 mpc's with the pattern cut in half with the stl importer for a deep relief of 1.5. The mpc's are not laid out but the 2 ptn's were too large to upload...you can copy the patterns from the mpc..sizing is right just need to lay the mpc out to carve.

Hey Bob
look at the top to "help" it will open the help files
any thing you make will stay in the same format which I think is a bitfile. they still work with designer even without the program.
It seems to do a lot but I just pick a pic and use the smoothing tool play with that scale for real noisy pics it takes more smooth
Wish I could afford it

Hi, Hess,
Perhaps I'm having a senior moment, but darned if I can import any bitmap image into MeshCam. I don't see that option. In the File option, I can go to the Samples and work with those three but am limited to those and I'm too dumb to intuitively set up the tools, so all I get is the outline and no way to work even those samples, much less one of my bitmaps, as suddenly I have no tools to use in the toolbar, that were there prior to me importing the samples. And YES, I did register the demo and got the serial number reply. It's almost like the register didn't record on my demo program, even though I did it twice. If I can get to work this thing, I may well purchase it, as it's a far less cost than ArtCam and looks as though it does about the same thing, except it uses raster instead of vector as it's base.

is this a trick ,,,, or ( Treat)
This egg and dart molding was scanned from a small piece from my friend's circa 1900 house. Most off the shelf egg and dart moldings these days are not routed very deep. We needed to replace a 4 foot section. All worked well, but I did need to plane down the back side a bit for an exact match. I used poplar, but had some chip out on the dart stems. Since this was painted over, MDF may have worked better. He had price quotes from commercial mills that almost matched the price of the Carvewright.

Here a a couple of spin-offs from the apple box. I attach the top differently. I wouldn't know where to find a rolled pin. I only put a hole in the bottom. After carving, I counter sink it with a hand tool I have for that and use a 1 1/4" drywall screw to attach the top. It is easier to get lined up that way. I sand these and the apple box after the top is attached to line up the sides.

Sorry if I post twice but somehow I think I lost the original..
I love the little boxes. I find that almost anybody likes them for keeping whatever.
I like making them because they are nice and I can buy very nice hardwoods out of the junk bin for next to nothing as far as cost. Cut away the bad wood and you have a treasure of wood to work with!
As to a roll-pin. You can get them at almost any good hardware store for about 20 cents.
I make alot of little boxes. I usually 'used' my band and scroll saw before I got my CW..
For the pivot pin I usually use brass rod (hammered in a shop made Die to make the head) and I attach with epoxy. Or I file and a hammer a old brass screw. I make a little 'donut' out of matching wood and insert my pivot pin 'with a head' into the top. Slip my 'fitted donut' down into the hole in the top to hold it. Common glue used there. Hardly noticeable. I fix into the base with epoxy. I hammer the round end at the base part sort of flat so the exoxy holds the 'flat'. Make sense?
Anyway, (I hate that word 'anyway' but I use it alot) Very nice work. And then some!
I for one would not use a common dry-wall screw. Only because they tend to stain the wood over time. NOT that your use of one is bad. Just my thoughts from what you posted.

Hello to all,
I have seen some really nice patterns posted in these pages and I amazed with the quality and creativity that many of you have shared with us, Big thanks to all. The pattern was to large so it is on a MPC file.
Good Day, to carve some.

PS I will make available the Christmas ornament MPCs I used soon, I have been busy with some other projects that I need to finish for that little thing called money.

Here's a couple of patterns for trivets. I've carved 10 of each to give for Christmas presents. Thought I had better contribute as I've downloaded tons of other peoples' patterns. I spray painted them then used my random orbital sander to "distress" the tops of the letters and the border.

My dad's unit in France & Germany. One of my first carves earlier this year. The only wood I had at the time was some chip board and I was rwally surprised how well it came out.
MPC is too large to upload.
Any one know of a pattern for the Combat Infantry Badge (CIB). Would like to make that for him also.

I am getting ready to design a retirement clock for the state CSM.
Any ideas?
Being from ARKANSAS, i want to put a hog on it but the hog patch i have just didnt come out as well as i would like. Also thought of trying to do all the patches for the 4 BDE's in the state, but not sure about that...
Want it to be about a 10x12 or so with three lines of her name, state and her position.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated...
thanks...

I don't know if this patch turned out better or not but I think it looks good. Also, I am putting up a picture of a couple of plaques I did early on. I like the design I did for a man that went from E-7 to 2nd LT. I didn't know how to make the images the best but I liked the layout. It might give you some ideas for your clock

Guys can you give me some input on this grip. I am making a pair for a Taurus 1911 (a good friend of mine owns it). What do you think.... The wood will be Cocobolo (spelling?) and the star will be colorized.... Does anyone think they will be uncomfortable?
THanks for your time
Robert
Hi Rob,
I make alot of handgun grips more in ivory than wood but your design looks good. Remember when finishing Cocobolo it will not take oil very well. It will repel the oil like water on a ducks back. It is loaded with natural oils to the point it can not absorb any new oil.
I have buffed it with tripoli and and followed up with wax. I have head of others using shellac but I have never tried it.

I use cystal coat fiction wax the same stuff that I Finnish pens with just put it on a buff wheel and let it heat up the more heat the better. Coco will come out just great and you will not need any thing else and it will not slip in the hand
Don where do you get ivory
Dan where do you get ivory
Hess,
Most of the ivory is from fossils. I stocked up on some last year so I have not purchased any lately. Most of the fossils come from Siberia permafrost and some from Alaska.

Rob,
Not real sure on the Taurus model because I have never fitted one. The thing that would be of most help is the old set to work off if they are available. There is almost always going to be some very minor fitting required on the grips to the handgun. I have a document that may help you if you want to forward your email in a PM I will send it to you. Thank You

I use Cocobolo on many objects. If I can afford it at the time.
I always just sand and then polish on a buffing wheel with rottonstone (It is a very fine grit). I mix it into wax to keep it sort of on the buffing wheel cloth (Linen?). Most Cocobolo will polish to a glass finish. I'd say no oil is needed even if it would take it.
Oil from the hand will keep it as 'oiled' as it needs.

For a pistol grip I would 'think' not. I suggest you ask the person that they are made for.
I would suggest nothing but polishing the wood. But then again I'm not a big fan of Poly. Not that it is bad. For a pistol, I'd say, keep it natural and it will not get slippery and maybe dangerous. But then again I am not a gunsmith.
