I give about two plus hours a day to making patterns. Here is one I have completed lately started way back in PS cs2
The frame is a scanned half frame and arranged in photo shop
John, love what you are doing with your patterns thanks for sharing them.
The wood pic is set up to put into your Carvewright/woods 1 folder for viewing and use.
Note I do the routing on edges on a router table it is in designer for looks.
Good day and carve something.

This is the first time i've scanned something and felt it came out somewhat alright, I've been looking for this for a while so i bought the sticker at a fire seminar this weekend and scanned it, maybe someone can improve it to make it more apealing than what i did.

Looks OK to me.
We can't do anything different with the MPC file. We'd need the scanned image file to do anything with the pattern if that's what you meant.

Yep...http://forum.carvewright.com/images/icons/icon10.gif.... I made those "hugging hearts" a long time ago and posted them. Like Mike said, there are many that have been shared in the Gallery by lots of members.
I used them on a mothers day gift for my Mom.

I posted the MPC for these logos; the patterns were too large to post. I like to use large images to make my PTN's at lest 300DPI, you should be able to make patterns if you are using Ver. 1.132. You can PM me with your E-mail I will send you the Folder of this.

Here is one I scanned in this evening. Picked up some wall hanger pieces today at an estate sale. This was done with normal scan setting just to see how it would come out. Scan time was about 1 hr & 15 min. Best was going to be 4 hours.

You may SEARCH for Heart, or better yet, go to the Forum "New Posts" Main Page, drop down the list to the "Gallery" entry that has over 800 replies. Click on the paper clip, and scroll through the listings to the ones with Heart in the title. There are several that start with Heart, but there may be others that have Heart as a later word as well.

Hey all I haven't posted here and I'm new to Carvewright. I finally got my machine in mid December, long story and I don't want to go into it, anyway I'm a sign maker by trade meaning I have a lot of patterns or designs. I can open these up in to my Sign program and Export these as a PNG file. I do not wish to get into the copyright mess, but sometimes I might be able to help with someone needing a certain design. All I ask is for whomever to share their design PTN or their MPC with everyone on this site. Deal?
Let me know if you need something, I check my email every morning and please have a little patience as I look for the design, I have over 12 years of graphics and designs to go through.
Hope I can help, and like the new president is saying we all have to help each other.

Hi Robert and welcome to the forum.
That's a very nice offer and I'm sure it will be appreciated by many. This is a great place for sharing and it goes on all the time. There are even a few of us who will take folks pictures and turn them into carving patterns for the CW.
Let me ask you, are your patterns 3D and if so, Will your program export the 3D heightmap gray-scale the CW requires in PNG format?
Just curious.
Welcome and good luck with the new machine. You'll find this forum invaluable for getting through the learning curve.

I have carved several nice Lithopanes and several carvings. I have a flea market location for 12 years that I sell everything at. These will be a nice addition to it.
As for my designs, no not 3d, but after there are converted to png files they still carve very well.

A huge collection of beautiful Draggons in full color that could be made into grayscale.. I am NOT trying to steel anybodies art work.. It just seemed free to use? I have no idea. But I think so.
There is this thing you have to go through to get them.. I have virus cheching that seems to work but who knows..
No problems with the images. Sure wish I could thank him/her for those Dragon pictures...

I wasn't happy with the original file posted because it said "Clothes" rather than "Cycles" in the Bar & Shield logo. I found a CorelDraw file of this image so I modified it somewhat. I replaced the clothes with cycles, I removed all "hair line" borders, lowered the depth of cut for the Bar & Shield logo so it would "pop" better (visualy) on the final carve. I also changed the text in the ribbon so that its no embossed in the ribbon. I also raised the bar & shield logo so one corner is not longer being covered by the ribbon, just look astecically better this way.
Now when it is in the designer, everything looks clean and crisp.
Enjoy!

Any direct transfer of a picture like this is going to look bad. Use photoshop and covert to black and white - then convert to negative or a sketch and color areas using grayscale. Darker gray for areas you want deeper. It's a lot of work but it can be done.

That is tuff one,
That reminds me -
Three young women passed along to the Great Beyond, and found themselves in front of St. Peter.
"We had an unscheduled bus load of carvaholics join us this month, and as a result, we have to be very particular about who moves through the Pearly Gates until Easter" said St. Pete.
(Stay with me, I don't make this stuff up).
"In order for you to pass", said Pete, "you'll have to answer just one question".
Not having much choice in the matter, the three ladies agreed.
St. Peter looked at the first lady and asked her,
"Who was the First Man"?
Thinking it must be a trick question, but not coming up with anything else but the obvious, she said -
"Adam".
And the lights flashed, the bells rung, fireworks went off, the Gates opened, and she walked in!!
St. Peter looked at the second lady and asked her,
"Who was the First Woman"?
Following the lead of the first, she said -
"Eve".
And the lights flashed, the bells rung, fireworks went off, the Gates opened, and she walked in!!
(By this time, the third gal thinks she's got it made in the shade)
St. Peter looks at the third lady and asks her,
"What were the first words ever spoken by Eve to Adam"?
As you might expect, the third lady believes she's doomed. She paces, she cries, she thinks 'till her head hurts. While she's pacing back and forth, talking to herself she says -
"God, that IS a hard one".
And the lights flashed, the bells rung, fireworks went off, the Gates opened.....

did every one hear that the goverment is changing the national symbol to a condom because it more accurately reflects the goverments political stance.
a condom allows for inflation, halts production, destroys the next generation,
protects a bunch of pricks, and gives you a sense of security while you actually being screwed.
it just doesnt get anymore accurate than that.
have a great week

I’ll give a little story back to ya,
Seems this fellow met St. Peter at those pearly gates, you mentioned a little bit ago.
As he was ushered in he began to look around, and saw clocks -- everywhere, big ones, small ones, fancy and plain.
He asked St. Peter why all the clocks, they seem to be everywhere.
Peter answered, you see, everyone on earth has a clock up here, and when the time runs out,
it means I have to meet them at the gate to see if they can come in, -- or not.
The fellow then said I noticed that some of the clocks are running faster than others.
St. Pete said, well yes - when people do sometime wrong, like cursing and using profane or obscene language their clock runs faster.
Oh I see, the fellow said, I know a guy that has a carving machine in his garage, and the whole neighborhood can hear him swearing at it,
so would that mean his clock is running faster!?
Smiling at him Peter says, -- ah yes he must be one of those "Carvaholic" folks.
Whenever one of their machines breaks down, we move their clock into the office and use it for a fan !!

Does anyone use their CarveWright for making templates for use with a hand held or router table. I think it is a perfect application for this machine. The main reason for getting mine. Making a smooth template can take more time than the whole job! I have not found any posts where folks use their machine for this. But then again, maybe I did not look in the right places.
I have not run my machine yet because it is to cold in my shop. I may have to wait a few months.. Damn...
Anyway, I usually use 1/2 inch MDF for my temporary templates and the 3/8 to 3/4 inch 'good quality' birch multi-ply for ones I'll keep around for awhile.
MDF makes huge amounts of dust. Birch multi-ply seems to have some tough glue between the 9 plies.
Any recommendations?
OH.. And thanks for all the wonderful paterns and projects. I think I filled up my hard drive!
I think I'll crank up the machine inside the house and try out the Scanning Probe... Keep me busy for awhile I would assume.
Thanks to all from an old man...

Hi Will,
What type of router template would you make on the CarveWright that would be better than using the CarveWright to do the actual routing work itself? Or... is your inquiry due to your lack of knowledge with working a computer to make your template ... or is that what you are talking about to begin with? If you have a drawing or specs on what type of template you'd like to have (like many of the patterns that are always listed on this forum or listed for sale), let us know and I'll bet you'll find someone that would be willing to either show you how to make it on your computer, or in fact would make it in Designer for you, ready to carve.

My presumption is that you will use the template many times, to plow out a specific item, not a one time process. From your question, it sounds as if you make many templates for repetitive projects (possibly for a helper to do as you work on other items).
If it is a one time job, Bob Hill has a valid point to consider.
The short answer is YES you can design a template with the CW.

I make templates for my Legacy Ornamental Mill to make table legs, this machine uses a router, and it’s hard to make round table legs on the CW. That was one of the reasons I purchsed the CW unit.

"What type of router template would you make on the CarveWright that would be better than using the CarveWright to do the actual routing work itself?" Partial...
In my opinion, probably for any of the common work I do.
Not knocking the CarveWright in any way. I 'thought' I stated that making templates was a perfect application for the machine. TIME to finish would be my answer. I am very comfortable using my more than a few routers. I find that making the templates is hard to do, or at least I never seem to get that 'Perfect curve' using a drum sander and rasps or whatever...
At least to make well formed curves Etc.
With a good template I can knock out work with a jig saw, band saw, or whatever and THEN do the 'nice final cut' using a nicely finished jig made on the CarveWright.
NO.. Not carvings being made. Just as a router bushing guide as to form and function for the profile needed for a project. Maybe two templates for two different sized bits. A big spiral combination bit for the long curves (whatever) and another for a 'tiny diameter' bit to finish all the 'corners' or, curve profiles inside and outside.
And I envision even some templates 'carved' on the CarveWright to make curved surfaces that a big old fashion router can follow.
I do not know for sure because I have the machine but WAY under specifications to use it in my cold shop!
All I can say is.. With a 'nice' template and a router I can do nice work.
As an example. I am now in the longer than expected project of making two canopy beds for my adopted grandbabies from China. The 'Tester' I think the correct spelling.. The canopy at the top of the beds. The sides and ends I plan to have 'carved' out in with Chinese style grills and a few dragons (Carved on the CarveWright) on some contrasting woods. At least four on each bed. One at least at each corner of the Tester and maybe a BIG carved dragon on each headboard with the childs name someplace. I have not picked out that inlay wood yet.
They are twin sized beds. How long would it take to carve out the grills Etc. on those. Forever I would expect. I just think I can do it much faster with a smaller template that I will Index along the boards.
I am using laminated Panga-Panga and Sapele. Each wood is very expensive. Enought said on that.
I hope you take this as I intended. Not knocking that the CarveWright could not do the job but I am not sure the bit would last for one panel for one side of one bed. Get my drift? No hate here at all!
Just me and I say everything as I see it.. NOT THAT I AM RIGHT!
I guess I am just saying what I thought I said in the first place. I'd bet perfect for making tamplates for a router!

It is good for making templates, I make the templates and then use my hand router to route multiple items, as you said "I find that making the templates is hard to do, or at least I never seem to get that 'Perfect curve' using a drum sander and rasps or whatever..." the CC does a great job of that, it is more accurate than I am. Time to make the template is not an issue with me as long as the template is what I want and correct.
They do have some nice dragon patterns in the pattern store that I use on my electric guitars, but those will have to be carved on the wood itself.

I think it is funny that you want the machine for the exact opposite reason that i did. I wanted the machine to cut out parts for me and free up my time to speed up the process of my projects. This machine is great for that and for cutting out templates. I finally convinced the wife( she who must be obeyed) to get the scanning probe. can't wait for to try that out. Depending on the size of the cutouts, I would consider letting the machine cut the parts out but also make a templates for other uses or if you have a fatal crash with your computer or something like that.

I use mine for making router inlay templates quite a bit. I use acrylic or mdf depending on how much I plan on using the template. The 2 main reasons that I prefer a template over using the machine are:
1. Size restrictions like putting an inlay on a headboard for instance.
2. With a template and a router inlay kit I can make the mating inlay match perfectly, that would be very very time consuming trying to get a perfect fit of an irregular shape with the Designer program.

We are all alike and very different.. Whoever we are.. Just very different and all the same SOMETIMES! What make talking to folks a good day!
AND
I have a bitmap that I scanned from an old book. No artist here. OK, so I have a hard time making a three year old childs stick man.
Old man and lost my objections for asking for help!
I am making two Canopy beds for 'OUR' adopted China dolls. I would like to make a pattern to carve out the Tester (thing on top of the bed).. LONG boards and at least one inch thich at the moment. I san go thinner but not thicker... So I want/need a template to do that using my trusty old routers!
I loaded my bitmap into the CarveWright editor and it just did not look right to me...
The patterns will make open 'grillwork' or a pattern I will index down the length of the Tester to cut out the 'holes'??? I think I will try 1/2 inch thick wood for all parts of the Tester. Sapele and Panga laminted together if that matters.
Not knocking the CarveWright at all! Just to much work for it as I would think. So I want a nice cutout for routing. drilling. whatever it takes!
A very old classic Chinese grillwork but my cheep old scanner always messes it up someplace.
I have spent days trying to correct the the scan. Two feet forward and three back!
I am wanting about a 4 by 4 inch cutout.
AND I have no idea to post my less than perfect bitmap of what I need...

Thank you..
My beds will be a bit more Western style with Chinese 'thoughts on design?'
More like a Pencil Post Canopy Bed with Chinese Carvings and Tester Grill Work. Very difficult work to do in my small shop because of all the pieces and the lengths.
I order a CD and Book 'Chinese Lattice Designs CD-ROM and Book' from Dover Press.
I found out my problem was ME! Would you believe that? I used some old graph paper (10'th of Inch) I had around to draw my original pattern. All the pattern parts were 8X10 inch so they fit my junk old scanner (which does a nice job at keeping things square)..
Anyway, after much fustration, I found out that the roll of old paper must have distorted over time in storage and the grid (paper) was no longer square. I drew to the warped grid..
It is amazing how a few pixels off square can ruin everything when it comes to using a scanner! I should have realized this because I use to use some very expensive scanners and they did the very same thing. I just forgot about it.
Now if I could only figgure out how to draw using vectored curves like a Pro. Takes me hours and then I cannot seem to get them tied together as a unit.
NO ARTIST here! As I recall, I had Quark Express? that even I could do those curves and come out in a useable hunk of curves and whatever...
Sorry, I tend to ramble on.. Old Mechanic, Woodworker here.
Have Fun Folks!

You need to make a PTN from Ken’s MPC or use the copy and paste function.
Starting a new MPC – or if you use Ken’s MPC then remove the cut paths and copy and paste the pattern to the (R) Rear View (Ctrl+Shift+R) then Flip Vertically (Ctrl+Alt+V)
Change the Depth setting to .500, Set Board thickness to one inch. (Cut paths will give a warning if over one inch).
On the front view use the outline function and reset the Cut paths.
To carve the stock the correct thickness you need to use a carving board (1.250 to 1.500 inch thick) You will get a warning that your board is too thick, I press try again and it should cut OK, but like Jeff’s warnings on workarounds you are carving at your own risk.
Just “Baby-Sit” your machine – push the STOP button if the tension gets too great.
Thanks for the pattern Ken, I need to carve a few of them and use up some of my Walnut stock.

I decided to make a chain with my carvewright. This is what I ended up with...
The way it is made is with a piece of poplar that is 2" x 2" x 12" in a jig (the actual size of the material is 1.5" x 1.5" x 12").
You will carve the top and bottom of this piece with chain1.mpc and then turn it on its side and carve the left and right side with chain2.mpc
I have maxed out the files I can upload so I have hosted the mpc files on my site http://mobileprojectors.com/carvewright/Chain.zip

I was contemplating this same technique for carving statuettes and walkin sticks. Nice job! How easy is it to line up the carving on the 4 sides?

I know that this thread is for pattern or project sharing rather than comment, but I had to say "WAY COOL" about the chain!

Well .. this was the 5th attempt ;)
I think a statuette will be a bit harder to line up than a chain being on a chain it is the exact same design mirrored on the sides as it is in the top and bottom

If you're looking for top quality, I HIGHLY recommend Michael Tyler's site carvebuddy.com. He has a set of 3 roses that are simply top notch in quality and detail at an amazingly fair price.
Hey, I make and sell patterns and I buy many of his. They are simply the best!...http://forum.carvewright.com/images/icons/icon14.gif
This link will take you right to the roses page....

If you are running Windows XP there is a free program called ImageResizerPowertoolSetup from Microsoft that you can add. It will allow you to right-click on a JPG, select resize and pick one of 3 different file sizes. I use it to change 2 meg digitals to sizes accepted here on the forum. I tried making a .Zip to attach it here but it was still to large. You can find a copy at Microsoft or if you PM me your email address I will send it to you. If anyone else wants a copy PM me an email address

When you click on the Invert option it becomes inverted at that time. I use the design rotate option to view the piece from several directions to be sure I'm getting the desired effect. With some patterns it is very hard to tell raised and lowered apart from a full front view.

To add to the picture request. Was/is the picture a "First Generation" Digital photo, or a Scanned copy of a print? First Generation Digital is best to use.

I would work from the photo to start with - changing the face to more uniform color in greyscale. If you change the board settings to light gold high gloss you will be better able to see which areas need work. http://www.carvebuddy.com/free_stuff.html has free background downloads.

You can remove the background on an image with the Pattern Editor-use the magic wand and the eraser tool.
I also use Photoshop - set the image to 300dpi - remove background, and use the burn or dodge tools to balance the grayscale color. You want the image to look like an image you get when you scan an object with the CW Probe.

The part number and source is in the PDF that was part of the download. It is a spring pin/roll pin that you can pick up from Lowe's.

Gosh I have egg on my face. I thought I had put the part number in the PDF but I did not. I'll grab the number from Lowe's the next time I am there. In the mean time here is the exact size: 5/32” spring pin, ¾” long. If you go to a good hardware store they will have one.
