Having finished a carve successfully at last ( tho my flex shaft melted). I have a couple of failure scenarios to play with for finishes. The wood was oak, and I applied a dark red oak staing to one side and I found some marine teak oil on the other. So far, the teak oil is the clear winner. It's beautiful!

Once those finished, I used acrylic paints to the wood and then sprayed with high gloss poly. So far, so nice.

Has any had experience with teak oil on non teak wood?

I like to use a dark oak stain on oak. Followed by a couple of coats of shellac. Sometimes I will "scrub" the oak with a wire brush to open the pores prior to staining.

We're always interested in finishing techniques and tips. A few nice photos would really add a lot to this thread! :)
