I picked up my CompuCarve from the store one week ago and decided that I would push it to see if it had any problems so I could return it, if necessary, during the first 90 days as Sears permits. I have now done twenty five projects testing various features on several different woods, Polycarbonate and HD foam.

Thus far (surprisingly) no problems at all, it performs as advertised. But I was concerned that I was putting a big dent in the base warranty of 200 hours.

So, as noted elsewhere on the Forum, I decide to pursue the alleged extended warranty from Sears.

I bought Warranty this afternoon. 5 year Warranty $46.73, with no limitation on hours as with the CW warranty.

My extended warranty runs through 1/24/2012. It is the standard Sears Bench Top tool Warranty, with no special exceptions for the Compucarve.

I got it by calling the number at the back of the Operator's Manual - 1-800-827-6655.

The Sears operator looked up the model number 133.217540 and the system said Warranty was available for $46.73. I questioned the low price and he said that was what the system said, so I bought it. Certificate is in the mail.

The machine may blow up later tonight, but with the extended warrany I feel fairly secure and thus far well satisfied.

I am also confident enough that I ordered the Probe and the bit set, although they are back ordered until at least mid February.

I guess I will see if I can get one too when mine arrives Friday. And I wish we could find a consistant answer to this issue.

I must admit that I was somewhat dubious when the Sears operator said the warranty was available at that price. However, as a lawyer, I asked what I thought was all of the appropriate questions. He is probably not so throughly questioned buy most extended warranty buyers.

When I asked the Sears store people, including the Store Manager, about an extended warranty last week they were unable to find it. It will be interesting to see if you can get it.

Have them call the number.

Well I have had my first issue with not being able to carve these are the conditions earlier that day the machine carved fine.... shop conditions daylight.... later that night I tried a piece and had repeated clear board sensor error... the maching has 10 hours on it and gets cleaned after each carve..... I went to the troubleshooting section of this forum and noted several different fixes.. Which I must say I was a little taken with... 1) apply tape to wood at the board sensor area which as the truck moves up and down the wood I have no ideal where that might be..... Next one guy said press on the rollers as you crank down on the clutch..... one was install a small $6 light in the sensor area with velcro tape as sometimes the sensor can't read the wood is it to dark or something to that effect... Any way I tried all to include option 7 reading board sensor which read 0 Over the wood ... Did several power clear cycles no help I then grabbed the truck and noticed the LED flash from 0 to 115 several times but could'nt get it to hold at 115 the minute I let go back to 0 it went so I will try this mourning and see if light is the issue.... At night I have 4 High output 8 FT flouresent light strips on the ceiling... I have noted that this has been a problem from the very beginning with this machine... I will also call C/W with this problem.... I love this machine and want to see problems of this nature fixed not jerry rigged. If the sensor needs to have more output to see the board light or dark..... Then this should be done... I'll tell you my results after this morning test ... P.S> when I grabbed the truck it was down on the wood in the carve poisition..... My fingers are crossed........

Now that we know the extended warranty from Sears exists, based on the several people who have purchased it in the last 24 hours, what happens to the people who refused to buy from Sears and went directly to CW or who bought before Sears offered the CC.

Can they get an extended warranty.

I order a Probe from CW because Sears apparently does not offer it as yet. What kind of warranty do I get with it?

You will like the probe it does a great job,but does seem to probe a little harder than I expected, but very good duplication!

Stopped at Sears. Called Sears "Protection Plan" number listed in the back of the manual. Talked to the manager of the center. It does not exist. He made it sound like it might in the future, but at present, they are refusing all attempts at an extended warranty. They have been notifying all of their agents not to sell the Warranty extension. Looks like they are "blackballing" the machine. Make your own oppinion, but mine has been lowered as far as the "Craftsman" name is concerned. Used to be they stood behind their product. So, to the few that say they got a 5 year warranty, you're either LUCKY or you've been Duped! (-$46.73) Good Luck

I don't think Sears is blackballing the machine- I believe they are working within the parameters of marketing CW's Craftsman version through Sears. At this point in time a extended warranty would only be good if Sears could do the work in their service centers. This tool is too new for such specialized training so the warranty is not yet offered (and may never be). In time perhaps but not currently.

I won't stick my toe into the quagmire which appears an obvious oversight on certain stores and/or phone service specialists fault in selling the warranty. It is my sincere wish that those who got them never have to find out if its good or not.

Sears employees sincerely wish to learn about this machine and I applaud people like Lzee and the other Sears associate lurkers who want to give their customers the best service by taking the time to learn.

Some Sears stores are still confused about the warranty- the 5yr warranty does not exist. CW is not offering anything above the manufacturer's warranty at this time. If you talk to Sears district they will tell you that the warranty is not vaild. The manuals were printed by Sears and they offer warranties on most major tools, but if the manufacturer refuses it, the warranty will not be honored.

The Sears store in St. Louis are saying. "There is no warranty available at this time on this item except the manufacture warranty. Sears has been unable to work out a extended warranty plan with the manufacture".

Only time will tell the out come!

Mar 20th, purchased the standard bench top tool warranty today. I called the number on the back of the manual, the salesman said they didn't have an extended warranty. He even checked with his supervisor, and said they don't offer it. I said some of my friends (you guys) had bought it and that it said right in the Craftsman manual to call this number for a purchase protection agreement. I further said that my friends bought the standard bench top tool warranty. He checked one more time under bench top tools and said "there it is". He apologized that he couldn't find it earlier and sold me the 5yr warranty for $45.59. It may be worthless, but somehow I think a big company like Sears will at least try and make me happy if something goes wrong beyond the normal warranty. At that price it is worth any potential risk. I like the comment posted some time back from a lawyer (or was his wife a lawyer, I forget), that legally they would bound to what they promise. I specifically mentioned this was a CompuCarve System. I did not do anything to mislead them. Now I can rest a little easier, since my first unit, ordered on Jan 30th was DOA. My second unit just came in on Mar 16th and was late by their estimated arrival date (Mar 7th), got them to take another $100 off, originally bought it for Craftsman Club price of $1699, so final purchase price 1599 + 45.59 5yr warranty = 1644.59 = happy customer. Carvewright doesn't have to honor this 5yr warranty and that is ok with me, I bought the warranty from Sears and expect if needed that they will keep me a happy customer.

I received my CC -$45.59 5yr extended warranty in the mail a couple of weeks ago.
It’s a nice looking certificate, But as you said it may be worthless as is.
I figured some of my bricker – brack art work around here cost me less than that.
So I hung it on the wall over my deck

I called Sears twice yesterday. and was told both times that there was no extended warranty available.

Keep trying and tell them you want the standard bench top tool warranty. I'll bet eventually you will be successful. The guy I talked to initially told me there was no extended warranty available, he even put me on hold while he talked with his supervisor. He also mentioned an internal memo that stated there was no extended warranty offered. I told him I knew of others who had gotten the warranty and they got it through the standard bench top warranty. I could hear him typing away and then he says "oh there it is, I apologize for not finding it sooner" and he sold me the warranty. If a little persistence is needed, for me it is worth it because I can rest a little easier with the extra warranty.

After reading the posts about the warranty (I bought my CC 2 weeks ago, they didn't offer warranty) I looked in the back of the manual. It states "To purchase a protection agreement (USA) or maintenance agreement (Canada) on a product serviced by Sears" then lists the phone number. I think the key wording is "on a product serviced by Sears". Any thoughts? If I can get the warranty, I'll call and argue it wasn't offered at the time of the purchase, see what happens.

It will not be worth your time it is not offered and people who did get it still dont know if it is good I guess they will find out when they need it.

happy carving though

You're right, ljdm, Sears does not service the CompuCarve. All repair and warranty issues go straight back to LHR Technologies.

Sears does not offer an extended warranty on the CompuCarve. If you have any questions about a refund, you'll need to contact either the store you bought it through, or 1.800.4MYHOME

have had a CW since 5/2/06 and have sent the thing back 2 times and I still have problems.

It looks like I will be ignored. They call it beta machines and they won't back up anything. This is a continuing problem. My machine is a un-working POS. cable gets hot after 20 min. And it won't work with a piece of wood over 20 inches long.

I will try to call up Chris, but as usual he won't respond. (You would think that somebody would call me after all my complaints)

nick.obermire@gmail.com

The owner even said that he would take care of the beta testers, but for some reason has not.

I guess it's time to rant. I spent a lot of money for somebody else's dream.

Nick, I can understand your being frustrated (it does do a body good to vent sometimes) but posting the same rant all over isn't going to do a thing to help. I don't know the specifics of your case but it seems atypical of all the recent reports of CW service. Have you called and talked to the tech support folks (they seem to have really beefed up the tech support staff in recent months)? Seems like tht would be a good place to start.

Hey guys...if you haven't yet done it, call or email the CW tech people. I've got to tell you that they have treated me with nothing but respect and good service. If you're nice to them they will bend over backwards for you. I broke my quick change assembly and called them so I could purchase another one. The guy on the other end said not to worry and just shipped one to me No Charge....plus they sent the tools, as useless as they are.
Has anyone ever attempted to take the snap ring off the shaft and tried to puse the shaft and QC assembly out of the bearings of the truck? I have broken every tool that was sent, made and had made yet I still haven't been able to get the QC assy off the shaft. Oh yeah, I've used heat too. If anyone has done it or has any thoughts, please advise!!!

It sounds like you are talking about two things. To change the QC chuck you do not need to remove the spindle. Just a 7/8" flat wrench and the square nose thing the top of the spindle to turn it while holding the chuck with the wrench.

The snap ring on the "Z" truck is easy to remove with the snap ring pliers available at your local hardware store. I tried pressing my spindle out but couldn't with a small arbor press to replace the bearing spacers. It wouldn't budge. The spindle is in there just to damn tight. I talked to LHR and was told to send it to them and they would take care of it. I should have it back pretty soon.

In the manual it said: To purchase a protection agreement (USA) or maintenance agreement (Canada) on a product service by Sears: call.......etc..

Is that an extended warranty?

I have read all the issues on Sears warranty, here is what I just currently read off the Sears Website as you go to buy the Compucarve online. I bought and paid for a 5yr warranty 4 weeks ago for the same price of $299.00. No questions asked other than mine as to if I have to bring into the sears store, which I do. The next question I asked was who pays the shipping to where ever it goes to for repair, the answer I got was Sears pays for the shipping and repairs.

Ijust picked my machine up yesterday and I also got a 5 year extended plan for $299.00. Infact they asked me if I wanted to and I said Heck yes. For that kind of money I am covered for any tripsit has to make for service, parts and labor. I realize the bits, sand belts and maybe drive belts aren't covered for that period, but I understand about everything else is. How can you pass it up for $300 on a $1900 machine with many known problems.

I am sending mine back for refund. and then buy another one. Sears is sending UPS out to pick up.
