Spent the past few (way too many!) months designing and making this. It's a fully working wood fishing reel. Even the gears are wood. All, of course, done on the CW. Made of walnut and hickory. I made a plaque to hang it on by etching a Bass and the lettering onto a piece of wood I got from another one of our CW members, Glen Yoder. He said his dad cut it when he was little, and never got around to doing anything with it before he passed. Hope he thinks this is a worthy project for it!Don't think I'd actually take this thing fishing, but it sure is a nice conversation starter....515255152651527

Wow, that is beautiful. You know you have to catch a fish with it.

That is Fantastic! I can see how much work went into this, and a reel completely out of wood. Great Job!

Beautiful work! Is it functional in the real world? I wouldn't expec t it to go fishing, but can it do demonstrtion casts in the backyard?

Thank you all for the kind comments! I'm rather proud of this one. :)

It works in all regards. I actually took it out into the back yard for a few casts, in the snow no less. I don't think I would ever take it fishing, because with my luck I'd hook the fish of my dreams and tear the thing apart! But one of the main design goals is it had to work just like the real thing.

I've been working on it on and off for the past 5 months. It's made up of 20 parts made on the CW. The hard part, as I'm sure you can imagine, is the gears. If I ever come up with a set of gears easier to make I might think about selling the pattern. But I can already hear the angry shouts from shops coast to coast as people tried to get them just right. Oh, the humanity.... Lol

What can I say, guys? Keeping up with you guys is darn near impossible. I can only dream of making some of the stuff I see on here. This is my attempt at placing as an also-ran, so people would at least know I was here! :)

Thank you all!

That is simply amazing. Monte wants you to take it apart and take pics of those gears! He says it's the neatest thing he's seen on here yet! I make him look at my screen now and then... and this one I HAD to show him!

For those that asked about the gears, here's a quick shot of them.

I'm in the process of making another reel, and thought I'd take a pic of this set instead of taking the other reel back apart. I have two sets I'm playing with. The wood ones I'm still working on. These work, but could be better. I also made a set from acrylic, which would last a whole lot longer. Haven't made up my mind yet which I'm actually going to install.. Lol.

Both sets I cut on my laser. It's the one part of these reels I just can't get the CW to make without breaking. Open to any ideas if you have a clue how I can do it. I sure don't at this point.

DickB could probably help as his wood clock works with lots of wood gears.
I'm still very impressed with this project. Very unique.

Designed another one. These are getting to be a regular hobby with me anymore. :-D This one even has a decent drag system that works pretty well. I call it a Center Pivot Mini, as it's only 2 3/4" long by 1 3/75" tall. It only uses the cutting bit, so it's even fast to cut! Currently polishing up the pattern. Oh, these new gears worked out a lot better, and I think I'll go back to the other one and try them in it.:)51999

That is amazing, but I am dissapointed that you didn't come up with a wooden spring.

Trust me, Clint, I've tried to come up with a wooden spring! So far with no luck. :( This small, that flexes and won't break after one or two uses? No go so far. But, oh, how I have tried!

Thank you, guys! I'm really starting to get into designing and making these. It may not be all that much of a 'niche', but it's all mine! :D

have you tried Bamboo? or a spring made from Baltic Birch Ply?
