This is one of my recent projects. The challenge was to orient the grain vertically so the letters wouldn't break so easily.

Steve:
Your project looks great. Have you tried it out on various woods? Looks like something I should try. I also like the text font you used.

This project is made of Oak. I have tried many different woods on this type of name sign and found that the more dense woods carve better and have less tendency to break. Aromatic ceder makes a beautiful sign but, doesn't carve very well because it is too soft and breaks easily. Also, the font and the actual letters are a factor. For instance, the "S" or the "T" can snap off easily whether the grain runs horizontal or vertical. I chose the "Snap" font for this sign for looks and durability. The 3D effect was done in Aspire and saved as a pattern.

Did you cut out the letters on a band/scroll saw or use the CW? I've had issues a couple times with the cutout function and had a project ruined at the last minute. I often get it all carved and then use a bandsaw for the perimeter cutouts. Just curious on this one because it looks like it might be a challenge for the machine.
