View Full Version : Saran Wrap Boxes

Several years ago I took the cardboard box of Costco Saran Wrap and mounted it to the bottom of the cupboard. Just before Christmas the box came apart and what a pain to not to have the saran wrap handy. This lead to designing my first box... with grapes. I am now finishing up my sixth box. I have enclosed pictures of four of the boxes... each made to mount under a cabinet or under a shelf in a pantry. My seventh one has a slightly different design, which is meant to sit on the counter (a request by the recipient) and I'll be posting a picture of it when I get it painted.

The patterns on #2,#3, and #4 are from VictorClip3D/SuperStore. I didn't check where I got the grape pattern (sorry).50974
5096950970509715097250973 I just added the bear family box front...that one is already gone to Washington State (it also is a V.Clip3D pattern.

They Look Great Sharon! love the Idea -- I hate fighting with those little boxes of wrap, I end up wasting more than I use.

Great Idea, Like how you even design a spot for the cutter. The look really good.

Sharon, great idea! Where did you get the cutter? Is it salvaged from the original Saran Wrap boox maybe? This might even be a neat way to hide a roll of paper towels too.

I'm curioius about the cutter also. I assume it came off the box as it is the type that comes with those big rolls. Does it just snap in to the slot you cut? Is it glued on? Please enlighten us. Great project, btw!

Thanks for the comments everyone. And yes, the cutter is the one that comes with the saran wrap. I did have to trim each end of the cutter, on the bandsaw, to fit in the slot. When loading the box you insert the saran wrap through the top slot and close the lid. Then insert the cutter into it's slot. It is a tight fit and doesn't come out easily. The lid on the first box hinges on the side and closes with a hook/keeper on the side. The others hinge on the bottom and the lid is held with a cabinet magnet. You do have to remove the magnet to insert the roll of saran but that is no problem as you don't have to do that very often.

Hey Sharon,
Just wondering if you plan on perhaps selling this project to forum members?

Could you share information, like how the cutter works, and how you hang the roller?

Thanks

For those of you that asked I will try and upload the mpc for both the Under-the-Cabinet and the Counter Top Models of the Saran Wrap Box. And here are several photo's of the Counter top model.5103251033

Here are the mpc's for the two different boxes. I use "rails" with my designs so you might want to add more dimension to your board in designer.

Thanks so much for sharing! I made the mistake of telling my wife about your project. I was dreading having to figure it out from scratch, but you've saved me!

Forgot to mention... when I mounted the Under the Cabinet Model my cabinet had a 3/4 lip on the front. To get below this, when mounting, I purchased 3 - 1" plastic spacers from Lowes (placed 2 towards the front and 1 towards the back. You have to duck-down to even see this spacing. As for hinges: On the one that opened from the side I used a small 4" hinge. On the rest I hinged from the bottom of the lid using a 1-1/16" x 30" (cut to size) that I purchased at Lowes.

Sharon great looking projects. Ducky63, look for open office on the internet, it will open office word files.

Just noticed I do believe the side grapes is one of the patterns I made and shared on my site. Looks great.
