Well, I finally got around to carving the Judas betrayal of Jesus pattern I posted a while back
http://forum.carvewright.com/showthread.php?17362-Religious-amp-Inspirational&highlight=judas

I'm quite pleased with the way it turned out-

The wood is mesquite and the carve took about an hour and a half. I really like the way mesquite carves as there is almost no sanding needed (seriously, less than 20 seconds to just clean up the edges)

That really came out nice Lawrence. Are you going to put any stain on it or just top-coat it?

Thanks for the kind words guys-- I got some finish on it tonight and took a quick pic or two. I am pretty happy with the effect. I used a washcoat of thinned shellac and before it had a chance to dry (it dries VERY quickly here) I smeared light brown briwax all over it, taking care to get into the nooks and crannies. I then wiped the excess off and massaged it all with my fingers. I then used a beale buffing system and lathe to buff the whole thing. The effect adds age without being overwhelming and also creates shadow effects which help with the definition of the details.
