Hello,

Here is a preview of the next Project of the Month (for FEBRUARY 2012), the Quilted Heart Box.

Make a loved one smile with this unique “quilt-top” heart box! Fill it with “goodies” or...ahem...fine jewelry for that special someone in your life!
The project uses the 1/16" Carving Bit and the 1/8" Cutting Bit. No other bits are required.
The overall dimensions of the finished Quilted Heart Box project are about 8˝" x 7˝" x 2" ( or 3" or more) tall.

NOTE: This project includes an extra box-section mpc file for making one (or more) additional sections to increase the height and storage capacity of your box, if desired.

Main items you will need:

1) The Project Files (included):
• Quilted_Heart_Lid.mpc
• Quilted_Heart_Box.mpc
• Extra_Box_Section.mpc (optional)

2) Boards with the following dimensions:
Heart Lid: .75" x 9" x 23"
Heart Box: .75" x 9" x 24"
Extra Section: .75" x 9" x 16"

(NOTE: Do not use boards that are smaller than specified above, or if you are using a sled, you can subtract 7" from the length of the board and have the sled provide the extra 7" required)

3) Sandpaper, wood glue, clamps, stain and/or paint and clear finish, three self-stick felt or nylon disks for placing onto the underside of the box

4) A Dremel-type rotary tool with assorted sanding wheels and bits to sand small details and speed up preparation for finishing.

Apply stain/paint and clearcoat of your choice. Here’s what I used on my Quilted Heart Box made from Select Pine:

• MinWax Sedona Red stain #222
• Several spray coats of Krylon Clear Gloss acrylic

Lynnfrwd,
A question on the Carvers Club subscriptions. If you have an active subscription and take advantage of the $20 off reduction, does this just add 12 months to the current expiration month? Inquiring (thrifty) minds want to know. Thanks

It does add 12 months to however many you have left. You don't lose any. If you have 4 months remaining then you will have 16 months.

OK everyone, we are releasing the Quilted Heart Box now, so that you have time to make it for your sweetie!

We have also decided not to make you wait a month to get the Project of the Month, if you want to buy it full price. We will release it each month at the same time as part of the Project of the Month ($10 per project for a year) and full price, as individual project.

It's available now.

It is not part of the CarversClub. It is part of the Project of the Month Club and is available at full price as a project on the PatternDepot.

Do you have down drafts set up on the tables your machines sit on?

Hi Bob,

I don't use any dust collection of any kind. I scoop out (by hand) excess sawdust during bit changes, and use compressed air and a ShopVac to clean out the machines (and the floor) after finished with a project run.

I think most people have concluded that a downdraft system doesn't perform as well as a top-mounted dust collection system.

There are two top mount systems that folks "swear by"... both were designed by fellow forum members. A Do-It-Yourself system was designed by Frederick Potter (he posted the PDF files here on the forum). Another similar system is pre-assembled and available for sale. That system was designed by Floyd Harris and can be purchased at an economical price. NOTE: You still need to provide your own vacuum with both those devices, as well as ground your machine properly to avoid "zapping" it to death.

I recently purchased the Redneck blues dust collection, and it is GREAT. I did 10 hours of carving without a major clean between jobs. I will be buying two more for my other machines. Great job
