View Full Version : The Mayan Calendar study

I've long been interested in the Mayan Calendar so I decided to carve one and study it in detail. Archeologists, Astronomers, Astrophysistists and scholars studying planetary alignment have been telling us that ancient calendar by the Mayans predicts the end of the world on December 20th of 2012. Has anyone seen the movie 2012?

Since that dire prediction for 2012 would have very serious consequences for my planned retirement in February of 2013 I thought I'd try to better understand what made them interpret the end as showing up on this calendar.

I found a well rendered pattern and put it in the CW as a project to carve for some 7 hours. Then out came the magnifying glass and my search really began in earnest. I think the photos attached may well help explain why they interpret the symbols within the carving as signs of this awful ending. See what you think . . .

50119 The calendar

50120 The final quarter

50121 and there it was

It just does not look very good for my retirement. Anybody want to buy a used but good CarveWright?

Sorry gang, I couldn't resist . . . .

Capt. Bruce,
I am not sure about that technical stuff but this is a possibility:

50123

Happy New Year!

ps: I read the other book and it does NOT end this way!

I was thinking of making a clock with a "well rendered pattern" of the mayan calendar. Where did you get it?

Does the calendar end on Dec. 22th or is that the predicted date for the end of the world? Doesn't sound too bad to me!

because of the discussions here, I have stayed away from any patterns offered on ebay.
I found this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/CRAFTSMAN-CARVEWRIGHT-COMPUCARVE-MAYAN-CALENDAR-/180640021920?pt=Routers_Bits&hash=item2a0efbfda0

This is the one and it is legit?

DLTCCF,

That's the one. Can't comment on legit but couldn't find it elsewhere so I bought it. Very pleased with the detail of the carve.

As most of the sellers detractors say... he is selling patterns that were taken from this site and originated as free offerings by the carvewright users. The mayan calendar was a freebie on this forum a few years ago. It was named Aztec_calendar_01.ptn.

I don't know if it is still available on the forum or not. I tried to upload it but the 2.5 meg file size is too large for this new forum. I will try to upload it as a zip file later.

I have a very large DXF file that I converted to a vector carve of the Mayan Calendar. It is 3 boards wide and would require carving each board and then trimming and gluing them together.

PM me with your email address and I can send them to you. They are too big for here.

Ed,
It looks like your file didn't work. I tried it and even the zip file is too big. I will put it on my website for a while for anyone that wants to download it.

It appears that when you zipped it, you zipped the link to the file rather than the file itself.

I remember getting a vector image of this calendar off the web somewhere and converting it to greyscale, then importing it into designer. Anyone can probably find a suitable image and repeat the process.

Someone has been predicting the end of the world for as long as there have been people. In one way they may all have been right in that it most likely will end someday. So far, however, everyone has been wrong about the date. The world ending (as we know it) is not necessarily the same as the world ending as in total destruction. The birds and bees may lament the passing of humans but go on to live their lives in a quieter, greener, sunnier world.

P.S. You are all invited to my end of the world party tonight! My place 8PM.!! Be there or be square! I hope it's better than the Y2K party a few years ago.

Thanks for sharing Benedikt's music played on your Liquid Violin. People sure do create some beautiful music on your creations. What an appropriate way to start the next Mayan cycle with a coffee in hand.
I love his creative visual featuring your design on his cover shot.
A Merry Christmas to you Sir and all success in the coming New Year!
